Default College Dieting

Hi ladies,

I was wondering if any of you wonderful cysters had any tips and advice on dieting in college. It's so hard for me to eat healthy and make good choices when a) my university doesn't have a cafeteria, b) the meal plan is fast food basically and c) I don't have a lot of time.

I do have a kitchen in my dorm apartment and I love to cook. It's just hard to find recipes that a cheap (poor college student!) and that don't take a lot of time to prepare. I only have one other roommate so making larger quantites isn't quite beneficial.

Any help?

Thanks!

I remember those days well--mostly because I just got out of them! I moved into a house because I hated living in the dorm and having to rely on the school to feed me. You are definitely at their mercy when it comes to food choices. I was lucky enough that my school does have a cafeteria, but the endless supply of pizza and pasta and tacos calls much more frequently than the wilted salad bar. Besides that there is the Quiznos, Chickfila, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut that is in the student center! It's all very frustrating. The good news is that you have a kitchen! I love AllRecipes(.com). They have a section called Campus Cooking (I just found it--but I wish I'd found it a year ago). But kitchen aside, I eat a lot of light soups, especially for lunch. Also, I don't know what the rules in your dorm are, but consider investing in a crockpot--you can find lots of healthy recipes on the web for them. The crockpot is definitely a timesaver for me--I love having to do minimal work for excellent dinners!

Hope this helps!

Hi! I'm running into the same problems with a cafeteria! I get a lot of things from the deli (turkey, wheat wraps) or I go for the standard pb&j on wheat bread (we don't have whole grain here!). I eat the clear soups or make something from the salad bar. There are only so many options before you get sick of eating the same thing! The fruit options are a bit lacking. I eat a lot of apples and oranges but usually I go to the supermarket and stock up on my own fruit. You're lucky that you have a full kitchen, one of the perks of the upperclassmen dorms is that they have a kitchen in the suites but they don't have stoves! So I'm a little limited as to what I can cook but I still make things on the top burners. Also, crockpots are a lifesaver, I would recamend investing in one! I hope this helps!
