Default coloring hair that's falling out

I've just recently noticed my hair falling out -- frankly, I suspect it's because I started on Synthroid, but it could just as easily be hypothyroid or PCOS. I have prematurely grey hair, and have been coloring it dark brown for years (I am 34), but now I'm afraid to do it, because I'm afraid it will make the scalp even worse and make the hair fall out worse. Anyone here have experience with coloring their falling-out hair? I'll let the grey grow in if I have to, but I'd rather not -- we're not talking about a strand here and there, we're talking majority of hair is grey/silver/white -- I can only judge by my roots, because I haven't seen my own hair color in years :-(

My hair was falling out big time when I got highlights put in. I guess it was because of the chemicals. So my hairdresser suggested a colour rinse instead. It works as a conditioner, at the same time adding colour to your hair. The colour washes out in about 3 weeks. I love it, it leaves my hair so soft and shiny.
