Combination OCs Effective For Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Adolescent Girls
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 12 - Two oral contraceptives, both containing estrogen but different progestogen components, are comparably effective and safe for treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adolescent girls, according to a report in the May issue of Fertility and Sterility.
Dr. George Mastorakos and colleagues from University of Athens, Greece compared the effects of combined oral contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol with either cyproterone acetate or desogestrel on hirsutism scores, androgen, and lipid profiles in 28 adolescent girls with PCOS.
The patients tolerated both oral contraceptive formulations well, the report indicates, without significant changes in body-mass indices (BMI) or waist/hip ratios.
Treatment with either combination brought significant declines in hirsutism score from the sixth month of therapy through the end of the study at 12 months, the authors report.
Testosterone, free testosterone, androstenedione, and 17-hydroxy-progesterone levels fell after treatment in both groups, the findings indicate, whereas sex hormone-binding globulin levels increased and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels remained constant.
Total cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol levels, and HDL cholesterol levels increased with both treatments, the researchers note, but rises in triglycerides were seen only with the preparation containing cyproterone.
"In conclusion," the investigators write, "both combined oral contraceptive formulations are effective at ensuring normal menstrual cycles and reducing hirsutism in adolescent PCOS patients."
