As is the case with most of you, I'm sure, we do not have a handy $30k lying around to do with what we will. The thought of coming up with that kind of money to adopt is rather daunting. How did you obtain the money to adopt? Has anyone done an adoption loan/grant or second mortgage??

we are raising the $ via donations from family & friends, fund raisers, and I'm selling my crafts on etsy (my link is in my siggy). I know there are some 0% interest loans that you can get as well as grants. Our problem w/the grants is that we are still considered to be making too much money to get the grants. It's kind of a 2 edged sword...we make too much $ for the grants but don't have enough $ for the adoption. Crazy!

49lbs to go until my BMI is where I can adopt from China
It helps that all of the money is not due at once. So even though the number is daunting, you're really paying anywhere from like $10 to authenticate a document to a few thousand for agency fees or travel. Still, with our China adoption, we wound up requesting that the credit lines be extended on two of our credit cards and we're still working on paying one of them. With our Colombian adoption we were able to pay almost everything out of pocket because it did come in smaller installments.

Keep in mind that if you are taking out a loan, the government offers federal tax credits for up to $10,000 (or just above this) which can be collected over a three year period. Also if you use religious organization (i.e. catholic charities, jewish family services, Lutheran family services), which you can use whether or not you belong to that religion, the fees are much less. International adoption will still be 30,000 but domestic infant adoptions can be as low as $15,000 and with the adoption tax credits your cost could be relatively low.
We refinanced our home and that helped. The only negative is that now that housing prices have dropped so dramatically we owe more than our house is worth. If we had to move that would make it tough but we're fine here so all is well AND we have a happy, healthy little one. Maybe you can borrow from friends and family and repay them after you get your adoption tax credit?

This may sound crazy, but consider starting a blog about your quest to adopt, and add a donation button. Plenty of people have raised money for less worthy 'ventures' that way.
Wow. Thanks, ladies! Certainly got me thinking--I would never have even thought to do a blog, Kat, but genius!
Calantha~You adopted from Columbia? I'm not familiar with adoption from there...it's not as publicized as China or Russia, for example. What is the average adoption age from Columbia? That's one thing that has kinda turned me off to international--the huge wait times & fact that you can't really get an infant. But that may just be my misconception...enlighten me!

Michelle~Thanks for letting me know about the income criteria for grants...I didn't realize there was one, but it makes sense.
Also, good to know that although the overall cost is daunting, it mostly comes in small chunks. Helps to put things in perspective.
