Comment from The Biggest Loser doctor on PCOS and Weight Loss
Quote:
PCOS is quite common -- about 6-8% of women have it, and a whopping 28% of overweight/obese women have it!
PCOS has been rumored to make weight loss more difficult, but there are no scientific studies to prove this! However, many scientific studies HAVE been done to show that a lower-calorie diet and exercise DO induce weight loss in women with PCOS, and that this weight loss (even just 5 or 10% of body weight) can ameliorate many of the negative aspects of the syndrome: it can lead to restoration of ovulation and fertility, decreases in male hormone levels, and improvements in insulin function and diabetes.
As an example, our own Julie Hadden, one of the black team members, has PCOS -- she had a slow start, but has been just as successful as the other Biggest Loser contestants at fat loss through calorie-counting and exercise.
In particular, building muscle through strength training may help increase metabolism in women who feel that they might be disadvantaged from a metabolic standpoint.
Thank you it is always nice to read something positive about PCOS! I think a big issue with PCOS'ers is that we are negitive about being able to lose the weight!
Melanie

I agree. I think it's easier to say "I can't lose weight because I have PCOS" than it is to truely cut back on calories and kick-tooshy at the gym (or at home or whatever) . . . I used to make that excuse all the time. Once I started ACTUALLY counting calories (actually "points" on WW) and measuring my food, I started losing! Imagine that!
True, it's coming off slower than some people, but there are those who don't have PCOS who lose just as slow. Part of my slow loss on the scale is simply that I workout a lot - 16 lbs gone, but 2 pant sizes! yaaaay!

Most people, at least I did, expect the weight to come off so easily, but it took time to but all the weight on, it's gonna take time to take it off. In summer of 07 I was going to the gym with my lil health freak brother, and when I didn't see results, I stopped going. Seeing his disappointment in me made me feel so so bad. I still haven't worked out since then, and when I went home for the Easter holiday, I weighed myself, in front of my whole family, and I weighed 250!! My whole family was like *250* OMG..you don't look it..umm..whatever...do you not see this huge belly!! My cousin had gastric bypass, she was in no way over weight, she actually came 60 pounds underweight to be considered for the surgery, but she had it anyway, my sister was telling me I should do that. Nope, sorry...my cousin looks like she is fighting cancer and aids and any other sickness that makes you super skinny.
She is disgustingly skinny...I want to still have a lil of my curves...Well, I didn't mean to go on and on, but I have to keep reminding myself that it's not gonna come off over night. I'm a work in progress!! I hope everyone is successful in finding happiness!!

Thanks for posting that. These are things my endocrinologist has been telling me. So far, he has been correct. The more I have exercised and lost pounds and inches, the more my bloodwork has slowly returned to being closer to normal. The bloodwork's been encouraging but I still have a ways to go with getting pounds off.

I totally agree with the statement about strength training. I had been exercising (walking), but once I added strength I found that the weight started coming off.

I agree. It bugs me when people say they "cant" because they "can". Its not complex, dont eat so much. Its not easy because we crated a horrible habit, but that's another story!
I think that we are all stuck on how fast others way lose weight. I have friends that I work out with, and we all lose weight differently. We can do the same exercises everyday and the same amount of cardio and one of use may lose more weight than the other. Losing weight also has to do with our diet. If we are not willing to make changes in that, then all the other stuff doesn't count because we will gain the weight again. Thanks for posting this. It offers a little bit of encouragement for those who are really trying and get discouraged.
