After 2 miscarriages, I went to an RE for testing. During the exam, he felt a small lump in my thyroid and sent me for an u/s. I just picked up the report, and it says that I have 3 complex thyroid nodules. They are small ranging from 3 to 9 millimeters. I am about to go away for vacation, and I do not meet with my RE again until the end of the month. Does anyone have complext cysts/nodules? If so, what did you have to have done? Is this something that I should be worried about?
Thanks,
Shari

Thyroid nodules are very common (autopsy studies show that they are present in 50% of the population) and the majority of them are benign. One of the more common reasons for them is Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune thyroid disorder and the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Hashi's is also very common in women with PCOS. Nodules are rarely cancerous, but the only way to tell for sure is a fine needle biopsy, which your doc may want to discuss with you when you return to him for your next appointment.
Most likely you have hypothyroidism, which has contributed to your miscarriages and your weight struggles. The good news is that there is treatment for that! Did your doc run a complete thyroid panel on you?

Thanks so much for the great information. You really put my mind at ease. I kept reading that nodules often come with hyperthyroid. This just confuses me because I'm not having the weight loss, increased energy, and other side effects that they mention with hyper (my symptoms definitely go with hypo). I am also concerned because they said it is a "complex" nodule, which means it's not just a fluid-filled cyst, but it also contains solid matter. Like you said, I'm sure he'll probably want to do a fine needle biopsy.
I know the bloodwork we did recently also included thyroid stuff (not sure what exactly, I'm new to all this). I'll get the results at the end of the month when I get back on vacation. Thanks again for the info and the link!

Sometimes what they term 'complex' nodules are outgrowths of the thyroid. Occasionally when the thyroid is struggling for one reason or other it decides to grow beyond its normal place. It can do this by either enlarging altogether or forming small nodules here and there. Sometimes this growth is nothing to worry about, other times it can interfere with breathing or swallowing or disturb your vocal chords. It's rarely cancerous, but cancer must be ruled out of course. Surgery is only really necessary if there is cancer present or if the nodules are seriously bothering you (sore throats, feeling of being choked, etc).
It is a good idea to get a second opinion or a conclusive biopsy if the doctor thinks there is cancer. I've known a few people who have had alarmist doctors who have insisted there would be cancer, removed parts or all of the thyroid, and there was no cancer! So be willing to ask for a second opinion if that pops up and you have any doubts.
Good luck!
