Question Conception with Avandia?

I've almost given way to conception, but found that just the other day I may have O'd and so we took the opportunity to bd anyways, I just happened to think about it. Is there HIGH risk for the baby if there was conception while on Avandia?

I think I've heard that once one finds out they've conceived, THEN they MUST get off Avandia, but upon conception, it's fine.

Is there anyone that knows? Anyone actually continue on avandia while pregnant?

I'm concerned because Met has NEVER worked for me. Avandia is the only drug that's brought down my sugar levels at all. We're not actively trying, but a few thoughts crossed my mind the other day. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Rebekah

Hi Rebekah - I am on Avandia as well and I asked my doc. He said it is perfectly safe to take even during pregnancy. In europe they keep the mothers on it through out their pregnancy. In Canada, atleast, there is no indication even to be using it for fertility, insulin resistant PCOS, so most people use it on "trial" basis.
the FDA will always say to stay off of it durning pregnancy until the proper trials have been completed.

Hope this helps!!

No problem - I was veru concerned with my first IUI and I asked the doctor who did my u/s and he said let me know everything.
Avandia has been a God sent for me. I only started it a few months ago, but the difference in how I have responded to Gonal-F is remarkable! Plus - I have lost SO much weight with taking it too. Its nice when people are noticing it at work!!!

I don't know if it will ever make the difference it me ever ovulating on my own, since I only started taking it with the fertility treatments, but I am definatly going to stay on it!!!

Have a great day! Im off to work a little mid-day shift!!

xxoo

I actually started my period after not getting it for 10 years. I am now starting to O on my own. Avandia is the ONLY drug I can take that won't add on the lbs and will actually help to lower my numbers! I am also taking it with glimiperide which works AWESOME together with avandia.

If the test turns out bfn, I've made an appointment for the RE. Last time I went 3 years ago, I was on Clomid and it did NOTHING but put me in a RAGE of fits hormonally so I chose to stop it. I wonder if one could skip Clomid and go straight to Gonal-F and be aggressive with treatment?!

I tried clomid pre-avandia - and it never even affected me at all. My estrogen levels never went up - no follicles ever developed - so I did not mind going straight to Gonal-F - plus my insurance covers it all up front 100%. I wanted something that had a better chance of work for me!

NY is a state that only pays up to diagnosis and then your on your own. I've had the DX in Ohio and have been trying for 7 years now. I'm ready for Gonal F.

A friend of mine had an ovarian drilling, then had Gonal F and conceived TWINS. THEN she told me that the ovarian drilling works for up to twelve months I think.....well, when she was pregnant with the twins, I guess the hormonal change STOPS the effects from the drilling and then takes back up AFTER conception. Without Gonal-F she conceived shortly after the twins unexpectedly. She is such an awesome woman. She was actually a cyster here and she as well as other cysters met up locally where I was in Ohio. It was such a great time in my life to have those women whom I met once a month.

I found out in Ohio I have a bicornuate uterus. I'm a bit concerned about it, but my sister in law has one and has conceived her 5 children with two miscarriages sadly.

WOW - it is amazing how different Canada and USA health care is different. Not to be rude, but a country like the US has no reason why is cannot cover the health costs associated with infertility treatments - but that is another can of worms!

I was originally diagnosed with a bicornuate uterus, but it was a mis diagnosis. When I was talking to the doc about what to do - he told me generally they don't do anything now, but wait, and if it were to cause problems, they would go in a fix what they could. Luckily or me, it was the original doc who did the HSG mis-read the films, and it was just that I had a extreme T-Shaped uterus. He said nothing to worry about.

The ovarian drilling, I have not been approached by the doc about it yet, but my best friend, who has PCOS, had it done, and she benefited from it, and got pregnant on her second Gonal-F-Ovidrel-IUI. I am not too sure how long the effects of the drilling can last.

I was SO happy when I found Soul Cysters, it has been a life saver for me. I felt so lost when I was diagnosed in 2004!!

Healthcare in the U.S. is a bit of a mess right now. Really it depends upon the States and not the government. Each state has it's own coverage and depending on which insurance company and how much one is willing to pay, will depend on the type of healthcare you get. My mom is paying almost 300.00 every two weeks to ensure her and my dad (who doesn't have insurance through his employer)get some kind of healthcare. They get a list of dr.s to choose from (good or bad) and thats who they must go through to get the care and must get a referral each time they go to a specialist.

We have AWESOME healthcare because my husband is an RN through one of the city hospitals here. When we have a baby, any service done in the hospital is FREE. Also if we need emergency care or bloodwork or scans of anykind, if we have it done through the hospital, it's FREE.

Now, for a dr., as long as he is affiliated with Crouse, we pay very little, otherwise we must pay out of pocket and be reimbursed later (which really stinks because this RE isn't affiliated and all his tests MUST be done within the office).

We will be covered up to diagnosis (which I was already dx'd in Ohio by my other RE) but anything other than that will be covered by us. I'm going to ask for certain procedures to be done at the hospital, but some just cannot be. I'm unsure about the meds yet. We get our meds through the hospital pharmacy and get 60 percent off most medications. Fertility meds such as Gonal-F I'll have to call about on Monday as they were closed today.

Anyways, there are some states that allow fertility to be covered. But you'll find most states don't.

Our Democratic Presidential Nominee's have plans to create National Healthcare for everyone to be covered. While I think it would be great for everyone to have coverage, I also have friends in Canada and England who have to wait quite awhile to be cared for and my Canadian friend who has a chronic illness could have died because they kept testing and passing her by until almost a year later (due to the waiting on appointments). I do like the idea of FREE Healthcare in the UK. But I hear tremendous complaints on the healthcare systems.

I just don't know what will come of our U.S. Healthcare system. I only know we need to do something. But, as I'm sure you've seen everything here in America seems to be struggling, including our American Dollar. Just REALLY bad mismanagement on behalf of our government and even the American people. We need to learn basic financial principals to keep us from making bad decisions like signing for mortgages that people weren't able to afford in the first place.

Oh dear, I seemed to have started up again. My husband and I discuss politics alot these days. The sad thing about the American government these days, is that it lost it's luster to allow people to Invent new things to help our future. Instead we've built up this HUGE reliability on other countries and are too dependent. Reminds me of raising our children. Either you raise them to be able to stand on their own two feet so when you send them out into the world they can handle life OR you spoil them rotten, give them everything they want and wait until disaster strikes once they've made several bad decisions because they weren't taught basic fundamentals of growing up and being independent. I love my country and know we could do SO much better with ourselves based on the principals of our Founding Fathers.

Ok, Enough from me!

As for the ovarian drilling. I am tempted. I'll have a talk in September with our RE. I would like to do the Ovarian Drilling and the Gonal-F to start with. I'm not sure if he'll make me do the dumb clomid. I'll do all I can NOT to.

Yes, I love this site as well. It's hard being dx'd and really struggling when people around you have no clue what your going through. We've been struggling for 7 years. My sil wanted to have a race to see how many children we could have. She's on her 5th and still trying.....my other sil just got married last year and they have found out they're pregnant already ......with TWINS.

I'm excited but pretty annoyed that here I've been trying for 7 years and then my husbands youngest brother has twins a year after marrying. So many thoughts go through my head and I hate it. But I'm trying to be loving and happy for those who HAVE been blessed with child.

My RE just put me on Avandamet, which contains Avandia. He knows we are TTC very actively and had no concern about it. HTH!

Thanks Misty. Thats great to hear. I remember a few years ago they were on HIGH ALERT for women to conceive on this. So glad that it's safe as it's the only drug that really works for me.

Thanks for posting dear friend!

WOW - you have given me a lot of info on the healthcare system that I didnt know. Very interesting!!!! I guess no ones health care is perfect.
What kind of nursing work does your dh do? like cardiac or peds?
I work at the university hospital here in Edmonton, in Pharmacy - I am a tech. I LOVE working in a hospital!! SO FUN
So today I am 7 days post IUI - I am having some discomfort - but I am thinking it is my ovaries - the HCG is out of my system - so I am not likely to get a false-positive. I got bloodwork done today, to get my p4 levels. I should get the results tomorrow - I hope I ovualted!!!!

Did you have a good weekend!?

Me too. Sending many prayers your way dear friend. I dread all the highs and lows of the tests. Those are nerve wracking.

Yes, we had a great weekend. We spent time at my husbands parents and just went out together. Haven't had the time last year for mini vacations because my husband was finishing his senior year at uni.

He's an RN and works on the Coranary Care Unit. He's had training in Pedes though too. Depending on what happens with his loans, we may end up moving to another hospital. There is a government subsidy that pays 80 percent of my husbands nursing education depending on need. He sent the application and should be hearing between July and Sept. I'm SO nervous! That would bring his 60k bill down to 20k (MUCH more affordable and in reach to pay off).

Our friends graduated from college and found they were pregnant with twins. They have had to keep putting their loans in foreberance. Interest is AWFUL that way. I can't imagine what they'll have to pay. It's amazing how society says college educations are imparative to have, yet for most college students who have to pay their own way, once they graduate MANY (aside from computers and medical and a few other career choices) don't end up working in the field they majored in and make MUCH less than they thought. In the meantime their loaded with thousands in loan repayments that will be due 6 months from graduation which will be around 500.00 or more for those graduating with bachelors...MORE if they continued on and have other loans on hold until they met their degree.

What a scarey thought that is for some students. I'm grateful my husband got in the field he did. He can basically work anywhere and choice which area of the nursing field to work. It certainly helps during economic issues like this. There is HUGE need for nurses right now.

Pharm. Tech. Interesting field. My husband was actually going to be a pharmacist, but found he was too old for that field. At least when he planned to go back to school for it. Kids were competing for admintance to the schools and he knew he didn't have a chance so decided nursing may be better.

Keep me posted on your progress when you find out. How are your moods on Gonal F?

CCU is WONDERFUL. We just opened up the Alberta Heart Institute here. We are the leading cardiac hospital in all of Westren Canada - if not all of Canada - quite amazing. My oldest sister is a CCU RN as well. I wish the best for the subsidy! It is SO hard - but you are right, a RN can get a job anywhere. Even here is Canada there is a HUGE shortage!
It is so try about Pharmacy - the competition is unreal to get into school!!!

Moods on Gonal F?? humm ... let me ask Justin .... Well my first round, my estrogen went WAY too high, up over 6200 - and it wasnt until after when they started coming down is when I became a spawn of the devil. I found it the same with this cycle. I just felt really annoyed all the time! LOL ... it lasted for about 2-4 days so far.
I just bought a journal so I can write everything down. Every twinge - pregnancy test - what I take and when. I am driving myself crazy trying to compare my last cycle to this cycle. LOL.

I think you will do well with Gonal F if you decide that route. I cant belive the difference that the Avandia made between my first cycle of Gonal, with no avandia, to my second and third cycle with the gonal and avandia!
