Thread: Concerned...

    Default Concerned...

    hiya all..
I was diagnosed with PCOS.. but I'm starting to get frustrated with my doctor ... From what I understand (and please tell me if i'm wrong!) One of the things PCOS causes is cysts... and even after telling my doctor I have a great family history of Overian Cysts.. he doesn't seem at all concerned with wanting to actually find out if I have them.. Also, he never did any real tests to diagnos me, leaving me to wonder if its time to find a new doctor..

Any insight would be appreciated... Thanks!

I would definately find another doctor and let him or her know your concerns. I have PCOS and I also have small cysts on my overies.

Well, usually the presence of cysts is what leads most doctors to conclude that a woman has PCOS. If he was able to diagnose you without finding out if you have any, then I can understand why he's not rushing to do an ultrasound. The cysts don't usually do any permanent damage--they can be a nuisance, and can certainly be painful, but there's not much doctors can do about them once they've formed. If you're trying to conceive, that may be a different story altogether. But for me, whether or not I have a cyst right now doesn't concern my doctor all that much. He put me on bcps to prevent them, but other than that he doesn't check for them periodically or anything like that.

HOWEVER, bloodwork is most important. If he's determined that you have PCOS based on physical symptoms, e.g. overweight, acne, facial hair, etc., he would still need to do a round of bloodwork to look at all your hormone levels. He can't treat you with medication without knowing your testosterone, insulin, etc. So if he's not planning to do ANY labs on you, then YES, find a different doctor.

This is just my opinion, based on my experience. Go with your instincts.

thanks for the input.. The only bloodwork my doctor has done was after I'd been on the medication for awhile.. so he said they might not be accurate anyway....so i'm not really sure what the point of it was. lol

my advice would be to check out the thread that recommends dr's in your area and find another one......good luck. pcos can be frustrating as it is, you don't need a dr who doesn't test or seems to be spinning his wheels.....just my opinon.

good luck, most importantly you have found soulcysters, awesome place for support....Lisa
