Concerned... What kind of test did you have for diagnosis?
I am very concerned with symptoms that I have been having lately. I have been dizzy, my vision is blurry, and I have been very out of it (like a drunk feeling). This has been occuring for about a month, and I started Metformin about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I am up to 2000 mg a day, but the symptoms just seem worse.
I have been diagnosed as insulin resistant in the past, but I am worried that I may now be diabetic. I need help! What kinds of tests should I ask for? As much as I have been doing research, I still feel kind of lost.
I would like to know if the OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test) is a good indicator of diabetes. If so (I believe it is), should I be doing a 2 or 5 hour test? I think if I ask for the 5 hour test it would show more - reactive hypoglycemia, severe hypoglycemia, diabetes, insulin resistance, etc. Has anyone had this done?
Also, I think I may need a thyroid test just to make sure I am okay with the thyroid.
Thanks!

You def need to get the 5 hour OGTT it will show exactly how your body reacts to the glucose. Your symptoms sound like you may have a sugar problem (what I like to call it). Your medication may ned to be tweaked a little! Keep us updated!

You really should have the OGTT.. that will show exactly how your body reacts to sugar and those symptoms certainly sound like high blood sugar symptoms. It is very important to find out about it and learn to control is as soon as possible! Some people can just control it with diet changes and others need to add other medication (actos/avandia/januvia/insulin.. etc.) Exercise and diet changes (low-carb) always help! Good Luck

So, would Metformin make my symptoms worse if I have high blood sugar, or low blood sugar? I am just so lost. Nothing I seem to eat helps me... I have tried linking when I don't feel well, and I just continue with the drunk feeling. I have tried having something like juice, still seems horrible.
Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I agree, if I can avoid diabetes I would like to. If I have diabetes, I would like to know ASAP. It is very concerning to me to be 30 and feeling like crap.

The metformin should help control your blood sugar if it is indeed too high! I was taking only metformin for a while but it stopped being enough to keep my sugar under control so my doctor added a small dose of Actos. That is if you are indeed diabetic. You may have something else going on that you don't know about so def ask a doctor about it.

I took a six hour test that involved taking fasting readings, then drinking a vile sweet orange liquid for the next five hours, where the took blood and recorded the readings. I have type 2 diabetes.
Before my Weight loss surgery... I participated in a Diabetic study. I was dx type 2 Diabetic back in 2001 because of my severe insulin resistance. I was taking metaformin from May 2001 til Oct 21, 08. My metaformin dosage went up and down, as my weight did. I usually have low blood sugar and I can eat some sugar to bring it up. My A1c was 6.2% when I was 1st test in 2001. It has been between 5.3 - 5.9% since. I havent took any metaformin for awhile and I feel alot better. Some weight loss, as any weight loss helps.
I hope my little story can help you...
