Default Confused????

I went into the doctor today to discuss my sugars with him since I know that I have diabetes. All along from the Dr's they have said that my diabetes has been caused by my PCOS. Now after today the Dr is telling me that I have diabetes because I am diabetic and I have PCOS because I have PCOS. This does not make sense to me to tell me one thing and now tell me another. HE also said that there is no way to reverse PCOS, but everything that I have read says if you can get down to fighting weight many problems go back to normal.

They also had me on Glucophage and I only took it for 2 weeks as it made me throw up or have diarrhea after each meal for the whole 2 weeks. Now I don't know about anyone else, but I can't justify taking something that continues to make me so sick without seeing any kind of result with my sugar levels. I am so confused right now and on top of it all the Dr. will not help me with any other kind of medication to control my diabetes. So am I totally confused or have I been misinformed this whole entire time on the causes, effect and resolutions for PCOS?

Sorry so long, I am just so confused.

Bree ~ Yes, it is all very confusing. My understanding is that the elevated insulin levels from PCOS can turn into diabetes. You go from being insulin resistant to being diabetic eventually.

My story ~ I am on gluc/avandia and since my meds have been adjusted I have been having cycles on my own, O'ing on my own and my sugars have been wonderful. I have also been low carbing to help things along. Did you start out slowly on Gluc and work your way up? I had a few tummy troubles when I first started out on it but it went away after a few weeks. Maybe you were on too much too fast? I always have tummy troubles for a few days when my dosage is adjusted too. I believe the 2 are hand in hand and make a vicious cycle. You have high insulin b/c of PCOS which causes all kinds of problems with hormones and then diabetes causes more problems on top of that. I had to go through 4 endos til I found one I liked. As far as reversing symptoms ~ I used to have that arcanthos negricans ~ dark skin behind neck and other places on my body ~ all gone. I NEVER had cycles on my own til I got on the right combo of meds. Never O'd on my own w/ out the use of fertility drugs. So from my point of view ~ most of my symptoms have reversed. I guess I will always be diabetic now but hope to manage it by diet alone eventually when I am able to lose enough weight.

Hang in there!
Sherry

i dont think that diabetes causes pcos as much as the two can and do often occur together. have you ever been tested positive for insulin resistance? it is often a precursor to type 2 diabetes and is a cause for pcos (actually my understanding is that is the root of the problem) As of now pcos cannot be cured but much like diabetes it can be managed and when managed properly many symptoms will seem to disapear but will come back unless treatment continues. as for the glucophage, have you tried taking it with your meal, not before or after? when i had insurance and could afford it i took it for almost 2 years. when i took it i ate half my meal, took meds, then finished my meal. this helped considerably. it will still take time for your body to adjust but it will get better. Glucophage should also help you loose the weight. hope this helps! p.s. your little boy is adorable!
