Default confused..

I don't know where to start. So I went to my doctor last week to talk about PCOS and she only ordered bloodwork to be done. (I had a previous doctor that ordered both bloodwork and an ultrasound.) Anyways, the bloodwork came back "fine"? She didn't really specify how long I had to fast for so could that have thrown it off? I had alcohol and ice cream after 8 pm and had bloodwork done around 11:45 am.

I have the majority of the symptoms
-hair in the wrong places: a friggin 5 o'clock shadow, nipple hair (I read once that if you had 17 or more you probably have PCOS, well I plucked 30! from one nipple..gross yeah..but wth)
-skin tags
-Irregular periods (I haven't had my period for over 7 weeks & definitely not pregnant)
-weight gain all in my stomach (I've got mistaken for bein pregnant - talk about embarressing)
-family history of diabetes
-carb/sugar cravings
-lack of concentration
-depression about weight

I noticed when I was on a very low carb (30 or less carbs)way b4 I even heard or knew about the term PCOS, that when I ate something that was still healthy but a bit higher in carbs like low carb yogurt, my weight would go up. So, I never properly transitioned off low carb..

I would be willing to assume that the alcohol and ice cream probably threw you off a bit. I fasted for about 10-12 hours before my bloodwork, but I think the minimum is usually 8.

Besides that, it's very likely that your doctor assumed your symptoms were normal even if they aren't. For example, my testosterone level is 68. Less than 86 is considered "safe," but a normal woman shouldn't be more than 20. So my doctor called my levels "normal" when actually they should attract a bit more of his attention.

Do you have your results in your possession? There's a topic floating around the forums about how to read your lab results, and I'm sure many of us would be willing to chime in if you shared them!

An ultrasound isn't always necessary though. It all depends on the doctor and how they think they should look for a diagnosis.

Welcome to SC!

No, unfortunately I don't have the bloodwork in my possession but I'm gonna work on getting it and a 2nd opinion.

I've heard a lot of women on here who have seen an endo to read lab reports, a lot of time things are within normal range, but lean to high and low. If you're not happy with your treatment, i hope you get a second opinion. In the meantime, i'm sure you'll find lots of info and support here!

Thank you so much for the support. I'm so glad that I've come across this forum. The more I read, the more my symptoms make sense - Idk what else it could be if its not PCOS and PCOS makes the most sense. I'm definitely goin to seek a second opinon. This dr didn't take half of what I said seriously. I was telling her about during one of my periods the pain was so intense and when I took pain killer it did nothing (usually it subsides). Her solution for that and my heavy periods was birth control.

Most tests say to fast 12 hours before the test. So that should not have effected it too much. I agree with PP, your dr just may be reading the numbers as in normal and abnormal for a typical person, but with PCOS those numbers mean something entirely different. (my chloresterol #s were in normal range but since I have IR and PCOS they are considered HIGH) I think you should request a copy of your lab work, and if things seem fishy, go see another dr.

Update

My mother had an appointment with the same dr today and she discussed it with her and asked for a referral of an endo. The dr confirmed that I had PCOS. The nurse who called about my lab results "confused" me by saying that they were fine and that they'd see me when I had my pap smear (which wasn't/still isn't for awhile) and nothing about a follow up appointment. I have a follow up on Monday.
