Hi everyone, only been on here a few days, not really used to talking about my problems but here goes... It seems like I have had PCOS forever and all the doctors I have seen don't seem to do anything to help me. The only information I have ever found out about PCOS is by looking it up in books or on the internet. I have heard about different medications that are supposed to help such as metformin but when I speak to my doctor about it, his answer is "there is nothing you can do you just have to put up with it". I am now looking to change doctors as I don't believe what he says is true. Also me and my fiance have been ttc for over a year now and he says similar with that, just have to keep trying! Thing is, I don't have periods so it is impossible to tell when to try! I am also looking into lazer surgery to remove the hair on my face as i now have loads and have to shave it every day. I shave it in the morning and by the evening it has grown back again! I was given some cream by the doctor called Vaniqua, but it had no effect. I told the doctor this and he just shrugged and said well there is nothing else so you will have to put up with it or have lazer surgery. All of this is really getting me down as I now feel after changing doctors so many times that they are all going to say the same thing to me and I am just going to carry on living how I am. I really don't know what to do, I just feel like hiding in a dark room, alone and crying!

You have to remember that your not alone in this we all have the same types of problems and it does make you want to close the door and never go out some times !! but we are all a great bunch of girls and each of us have different advice to offer !!
Cant really help with the whole hair problem as I dont have the problem ........ yet !! but as for Met you should be able to get this from your gyne without a problem have you changed your DR yet ?? you really should if the only help they can give is "there is nothing you can do" because that is crap !!
thank you for your support. i just wanted to let you know i am in the process of changing doctors. i have a medical on monday. feeling quite a bit better today. just hope this doctor doesn't fob me off like the rest of them. Why is it so hard to get a doctor who actually wants to help? is tiredness a symptom of PCOS? i have been feeling really tired lately. not sure if it is side effects from some medication i was taking which i stopped this morning just to see or a symptom.

Leanne- I understand lots of your fustrations it sounds to me that the best thing you could do is find a new gp, don't forget they are there to help you go in there with as much info as possible so it will be difficult for them to say no to you. Have you been refered to a specialist??? If not do believe me it helps!!
Re: excess hair- if you are ttc there are lots of things you can't take that help like the pill of finesteride but shaving is the WORST way to get rid of the hair try waxing or creams. Vaniqua takes a few weeks/months to work so please persevere, like most things it doesn't work staright away! Metformin will help with ttc and the excess hair. Tiredness is a symptom of PCOS as many of us have low iron stores. Have you had a FBC and Iron store level blood test recently- maybe your anaemic???
English Drs don't know much about PCOS and it can be super fustrating but believe me being proactive and not taking no for an answer is the way to deal with it.
Good luck!!

Hiya, I have just changed doctors again but I have never been refered to a specialist or anybody. The only time I had tests was when I was diagnosed and I had a scan. After that nobody seemed interested. I used Vaniqua for about 8 months and when I had finished the tube I went back to the doctor but he told me he didn't think it was working and wasn't going to give me any more. I asked him if there was anything else, he said no, only lazer surgery but thats very expensive so he guesses i will have to put up with it. I have tried waxing but I have very sensitive skin and i come up in huge lumps when I use them, I've tried all different kinds, so even though it does make my skin sore and red sometimes, the only thing I can seem to do is shave, although having to shave twice a day isn't much fun! I have now stopped taking the dieting pills he gave me (Acomplia) and already I am beginning to feel less tired, even though I still do feel quite tired, its mostly at night now rather than at work through the day as much. Hopefully this new doctor I am seeing on monday will be able to help more, if not, i'm contemplating going private, although its very expensive!

I found with my doctors that I had to tell them what I wanted and not wait for them to suggest things so maybe when you see another docotor ask to be refered to a gyne ? and write down things you want to ask too in case you forget I found that a useful one. Keep us updated on what they tell you on Monday if you get an appointment !
yes, thats true. Sometimes you have to 'tell' drs what you want. But in a nice way so they cant take offence I usually say something like - 'well ive been reading about .... do you think that would be any good for me?' what id suggest is to write down the things you want to ask/say so you dont forget. Thats what i always do.
Thank you so much for all of your advice. I am definately going in there armed with knowledge and questions. I will let you know how I get on on Monday. I am definately not going to take no for an answer any more. I am a very shy person and usually don't like to speak out but I think its about time I put that behind me. Me and my fiance have been speaking more and more about having a family and it really gives you something to aim for especially being told by 2 doctors that I could never get pregnant because I have PCOS! It was only when I read more into it that I found out that wasn't true. I have also found out a lot more women around me as well as on the internet also suffer from PCOS! Well, hopefully as I say, I will get somewhere on Monday, if not, I think I might just go private, see how that goes, although it is very expensive but I have booked an appointment for next month just in case to fall back on, but hopefully I won't need it! I shall let you know how I get on on Monday, hope you all have a great weekend! Leanne xxxxx

Grrrr! So annoyed! Went to the doctors only for them to tell me that one of the doctors was ill and they had to re-schedule all the appointments! So now I have to wait until Thursday to actually get anywhere! I had everything planned out too, knew exactly what I was going to say and what I wanted... Oh well, give me more time to go through things I suppose, still very annoying though!

I sympathise with what you're going through - I went through similar stuff and what everyone's saying is spot on - you have to go armed to the teeth with knowledge, questions and a minimum outcome that you want from the appointment.
It can be tricky getting them to take you seriously at first, but when they realise you know your stuff and aren't going to be fobbed off anymore, they usually do what you want!!!
Keep at it and remember, we've all been there and we know how angry it can make us! Stay focussed on what you want out of the GP appointment (book a double appointment if you have to). Oh, and write EVERY THING DOWN! (Assuming your memory is anything like mine anyway!)
There IS light at the end of the tunnel, so don't give up hope!

What a pain in the bum !!! hope you can get your appointment Thursday
Thanks, I hope so too! I am just worried that even if I go in armed with all this info etc the doctor is still not going to listen to me. Maybe it is because this is the 4th doctor I have been to now! I am trying to think positive. One good thing is I had a period this month which is an extremely rare thing! Anywho, I have decided I shall sit in that waiting room on Thursday until the doctor sees me lol. I am also hopeless at remembering things and my mind tends to go blank when i am about to speak to anyone, a lot of you have mentioned writing things down, questions etc, do you actually take these written down questions into the drs surgery with you? I don't mean to sound dumb but sometimes I just need things spelling out for me, specially when I'm tired... that's my excuse! lol

If it helps you then do it. Sometimes you have to push and push for what you want. Keep going back and make a nuisance of yourself, they'll soon get sick of you and refer you on to the right people! (that maybe a cynical attitude but I'm a registered nurse and I know exactly how doctors work!)
Good luck for Thursday!
Thanks for the advice. I just hope I don't do what I usually do, and just either go blank or sit there scared of saying anything! I find it much easier to talk to people either on sites like this or on the telephone but I am hopeless when it comes to talking with someone face to face!
