Exclamation Confused?

My doctor has told me that I have PCOS, but many of the symptoms I have heard about I do not have? I'm not overweight (I'm 5'3 and 120 pounds), I'm not balding and I do not have any abnormal hair growth, the ultrasound came back negative with no cysts. What I do have is irregular periods though, I've missed mine for 6 months at times. Is this enough to diagnose PCOS? I'm 16 too, if that makes a difference. Thanks for any help!

I hope that your doc did some blood work on your hormones. If he did and noticed the abnormal levels associated with PCOS, it may be that the other symptoms just haven't shown up yet since you're young.

I have had irregular periods ever since I started having periods when I was 11 but I didn't have any of the other symptoms (ie excess hair, overweight, acne, etc.) until I reached college.

Did your doctor prescribe you with any medicine? Birth control or metformin?

I wish you all the best.

What testing did your doctor do? Hopefully he didn't base his diagnosis solely on irregular periods.

But, PCOS is a syndrome, meaning you can have one or all symptoms (or obviously anything in between). I was diagnosed for years before I ever showed a cyst on ultrasound. Weight gain was my last PCOS symptom to manifest. I do not have trouble with hair thinning/balding.

Did they do a hormone test? Glucose tolerance test? Do you have acne, dark skin patches, skin tags, or a family history of diabetes?

My Dr. diagnosed me with bloodwork and ultrasounds. I have only a few symptoms- hair loss and infertilty (although I have a pretty regular cycle). So it is possible to not have all the symptoms. I would request bloodwork if that hasn't already been done.
