Question Confused about levels and what this hypothyroid thing is

My doctors office just called to tell me they are going to up my medication for my thyroid. I told the nurse I don't take thyroid meds. she said well we are going to have to adjust your dose. Again I said ok so I have a thyroid problem? She said oh yes I am sorry didn't you know?
After having been diagnosed with PCOS in 2000 my doctor is just now allowing me to try metformin starting at 500 MG. Now I am getting a med for my thyroid also I guess. I have never been on meds consistantly for anything before.
So I guess I have hypothyroid somthing. She said my level was 7.9 and it should have been under 5. What does that mean??? I am so confused! Can someone help guess what she is talking about?

Robin,
Welcome to the world of hypothyroidism!!! According to your doc, your thyroid level does need to be adjusted and should be well under 5 to be considered normal, so she is correct. Taking medication daily can regulate your thyroid. I take levothyroxine, the generic form of synthroid, a popular thyroid medication. My RE diagnosed me as hypothyroid in June at the same time she diagnosed my PCOS. So immediately, I went on metformin and levothyroxine. For your general health, it's important to keep your thyroid in good working order. Hope this helps! Best wishes!
