Question Confused about my diagnosis....

I am a new member here....I've been reading messages on the board for the last few days but just joined as a member. I had a dr. appointment this morning and I am confused.

Long story short, DH and I have been trying for #2 since Jan 2007. Since I chart my basal body temps I was able to tell right away that I wasn't ovulating. Over a year later I'm finally getting close to a diagnosis. I've had several hormones checked but unfortunately the doctor has not given the results of all them to me. I have some and I have requested the results for the rest but haven't gotten them yet.

These were taken on day 3:
TSH 1.13
LH 11.3
FSH 6.68
Prolactin 6.63
Estrogen (E2 I think?) 74.6

I don't have the numbers but apparently my testosterone, DHEAS, and other tests I can't remember, were all "normal" - whatever that means. The nurse told me my LH and FSH were normal too, but clearly they are not at a 1:1 ratio, which is what is "normal" from what I understand.

The doctor has prescribed me metformin but my insulin/glocuse/blood sugar have not been tested and when I asked about it he said it was not necessary to test it.

Also I suspect my thyroid may not be working properly even though my TSH is in the normal range, because my BBTs are so low - generally 96.7-97.2 - but he will not test my thyroid because the TSH is normal and he said that low temperatures do not mean anything.

I should probably also mention that while I am overweight and anovulatory (and thus irregular cycles), I don't have the other common symptoms such as male pattern hair and acne. I know you don't need those symptoms to be diagnosed but every time I look at the list of symptoms I just feel like they don't fit me. But I do have the high LH:FSH ratio. Although my LH never seems to get high enough during my cycle for an OPK to be positive.

Anyway, I'm just so confused and not sure the diagnosis is correct. Should I get a 2nd opinion?

Welcome.

Your DHEAS and testosterone could be in the normal range, but still considered elevated. I would ask for the numbers.
The fact that you are annov and irregular along with the FSH/LH ration, is technically enough to DX you with PCOS. It is pretty common to give an RX for metformin without testing insulin and glucose. Many docs believe that all PCOSers are insulin Resistant even if the tests come out in the normal range.
I didn't get the Hirsutism and hairloss side effects until after several years of other obvious signs of pcos.
If metformin helps you, being on it may help prevent you from getting those other symptoms.

I don't know much about thyroid issues. Wish I could help.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to demand certain tests from your doctor. Often times we have to be our own advocate for our health.

I don't even know if I have cysts on my ovaries, they never checked, all she did was the bloodwork, and the only thing that was elevated was my DHEA, I do have irregular periods and the extra hair growth, my glucose levels were fine but I am on metformin also.
