Since there is nothing to look at to answer this question, we just have to follow our hearts. My assumption is that there is fertilization of the egg but that it doesn't implant and develop like normal embryos. Other cysters can be more specific, but to me it's a baby in my heart, so we should listen to our feelings about it and grieve if we feel the need.
I'm sorry for your lost little one,
Sheri

A chemical pregnancy is often referred to as a "blighted ovum" or "anembryonic pregnancy". When this takes place, the egg is fertilized and attaches itself to the uterine wall. The cells develop the pregnancy sac but the embryo does not develop. All babies start out as cells dividing, so it is just the way you look at it.
I personally agree with Sheri, the baby is in your heart. If you are feeling the need to grieve don't let the technicalities stop you. Do what you feel is best for you. HTH.

A chemical pg is where the sperm & egg meet but don't attach to your uterine wall.
I've had 1 (my 1st loss) & my DH didn't even accept it as a "real" m/c until my RE said it was... It upset me but I can understand why he would think that. There was no "proof" that I was pg except for a blood test. Some men need "proof" that it was actually true. He didn't believe it until an MD told him it was true...
I've heard many women say that a chemical pg is just as it sounds, chemical. You have to have hCG in your body in order for a HPT to be +. In order to have that chemical you would either be in menopause (which some women do have + HPT's in menopause) or you would be pg. It is very rare to get a false + pg test so the only way to know for sure if you even suspect it's a false + is to take another brand HPT. A lot of women assume that they got a false + when they get their AF a few days later. What they don't understand is that they had a chemical pg, not a false + & a late AF.
Sorry, if I went too much in to detail for that...
Traci
