Default Confused...brain chemistry or hormones?

How do you know if the depression you/we feel is from all the messed up hormones from PCO or simply brain chemistry...are they related somehow?

My doc suggested taking antidepressants, but I so hesitant to add more chemicals to my body. I wish there was a bloodtest to check seritonin levels, and have some understanding about how increased hormones effect moods.

Any ideas?

Hi there!

This is something I've wondered about too. I truly don't know. Just from browsing the site, and other research I've done, it does seem as if depression is a common factor in those of us with PCOS.
Personally, I lost my job over it, then demanded anti depressants from my doctor. Since I've started the antidepressants, I've also started working out, and a low carb diet, and something seems to be helping.
It's still a tangled mess, though. The doctor has also put me on bcp, so I'm certain it's not addressing the problem at the base of everything, including my depression......(guess what we will be talking about at my next appt?). I expect it will be awhile before I have a solid answer.

So while I'm in the same boat as you, with depression and PCOS, I have no hard evidence, just some conclusions I've drawn. I think that our messed up hormones are related to the depression, but don't want to make any definate statements. It's true that depression makes itself felt often enough without PCOS, so if it's a separate issue, I don't want to discourage anyone from dealing with it directly.

Anyway, this is a long way of saying that I don't know, but I'm there too.
With love, your Cyster
