Yes, you can have IR and not have PCOS, but that doesn't mean you don't have it. Basically, if you have several symptoms of PCOS and have a hormone imbalance (such as IR or any other hormone) you can consider yourself to have PCOS, even if you don't have all the symptoms. PCOS is not a specific "disease," it is a combination of symptoms, along with some sort of hormonal problem (insulin is a hormone). Interestingly, you can even have PCOS if you don't have cysts on your ovaries (I don't know how that works, but apparrently polycystic is a misnomer). My doctor was not clear, either, when he told me I have cysts on my ovaries and my pituitary is not producing any hormones (which trigger all other gland functions), but he never said "you have PCOS" or anything like that.

Welcome to soulcysters. As you can tell, there are wonderful women here that all have different symptoms and different experiences. Someone here can help you find the answers you are looking for. I was never really tested, other than blood work, for PCOS. But, I do have all the classic symptoms plus type 2 diabetes. Back when I was in my mid to late 20's I started to really develop classic symptoms, even though I had symptoms when i was younger, they were noticable later on. Last year, I started have other problems and that is when I was dx type 2. This past July, I gathered up the courage to see my family doc who sent me to an endo. The endo sent me for blood work and put me on metformin. I am very lucky to have the doctors I have. A lot of ladies here don't have doctors that are supportive and helpful, like I do. My family doc was actually shocked that I was embarrassed with the hair and skin tags. He was very sympathetic and couldn't believe how long it took me to talk with him about the symptoms. My endo is very informative about PCOS and asked me questions about other family members. I don't have any sisters, but my endo told me that even men can have a metabolic disorder like PCOS, but it isn't called PCOS for obvious reasons. But they can have lots of hair, sugar problems and baldness and it is basically the same metabolic disorder. My mouth dropped to the floor. My brothers have the same symptoms I have, but in larger scale. Each one have different symptoms, but I have all of them. It all came together for me...I am sorry for rambling on and on..I guess my point is that every woman is different with their symptoms and the severity of their symptoms, but that doesn't mean that they don't have PCOS. PCOS is a metabolic disorder. I hope this helps and I wish you lots of luck in finding the correct treatment for you and in finding the best doctor available.
