Hi Everyone,
I am new to the site. I am really confused. I was diagnosed in early July and have been on Metformin since then. I don't really have any symptoms. I am pretty regular with the exception of being 1-4 days late maybe 4 months since January (before that I confidently planned a wedding date 18 months in advance based on when I would get my period. And I was correct down to the prediction that I would get it on the flight home from my honeymoon). My periods have gotten lighter over the past year but I still get them. The only symptoms I can think of are a little acne before I get my period and I did gain ~12 pounds over the last year. My BMI is still 24-25 though so I figured I was just getting older and a little acne is normal.
I do know I have some issues with sugar. I used to be a candy junkie and now if I drink Coke people think I am on something until I crash. I am now doing a low glycemic diet which has been working when nothing else has.
We have been TTC for over a year and my doctor gave me the day 3 tests and suggested I go on metformin. I've been taking one 500 tablet a day since. We meet with a fertility specialist next week so I am going to ask about everything then. But, I was hoping others might say their experience was similar to mine?
I am afraid I am in denial but also confused that my experiences don't match the experiences and symptoms I have been reading about.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. This site has so much information and support!
Welcome CK! I haven't had experiences like yours, but wanted to offer support. I am sure that others on here will be able to help you! You found a great board with a bunch of wonderful ladies who are always willing to share their stories and advice! Good luck TTC!!

HI!
I'm new also and have alot of similarities with you. I too don't fit the standard PCOS profile. An am also dealing with the infertility. I can't offer any advice or wisdom really only to say that I wish the best for you and hope we can both find support and knowledge here!

I didn't have many of the symptoms. I was not have regular AF at all ( I wasn't having AF at all). I was however, normal weight, not much acne, and no hair issues. When I went to the RE he did an ultrasound and it was very clear that I had many cysts on my ovaries. Let us know how your appointment goes.
Hi CK! I have similar symtoms as well. When my doctor first suggested I might have PCOS (before the test results came back), I didn't think that's what it would be since I didn't really have any of the symptoms. I don't really have much acne, no increased hair growth, I'm very thin for my height, and most of my tests came back in the normal range. My suggestion would be to ask lots of questions when you meet with your doctor next. I just kind of took the diagnosis, and didn't really think to ask questions. Now, three months after I've been put on Metformin, I have a lot more questions to ask my doctor next week when I go back for my three-month check up. Good luck with your appointment!
Thanks for the responses! I will be asking my doctor a lot of questions and it is helpful to know others have had similar experiences.
I can't wait for next week's appointment.
Yep. My DH and I will be going Thursday morning and hope to have answers then! His SA wasn't all that great so we have a few issues to work on and we expect his test will be repeated. My gynecologist said she is confident that I will be able to get pregnant though so we are keeping our fingers crossed.
make them do lots of blood work-not just related to sugar, but hormones, etc. those number tell a lot-unfortunately, I dont meet your scenario-I have a high BMI-the similarity is in the TTC part-which I took Clomid for my first baby and got pg with the second with out it-GOOD Luck-
also, you might try the TTC threads...

I am new here as well, and also a candy junkie. I'm just starting out trying to eat low glycemic foods. Are you doing a program from a book or something on the internet? I'm trying to find some resources to help me!
Hi Eri,
I'll have to get the name of the book at home tonight. There a ton of books out there but a lot of them were quite extreme with the low carbs.
The book I have is very thin and has some helpful information. I found the most helpful items were the one week sample plan and example of real people's before and after diets. It also lists out a bunch of low/med/high GI foods which is helpful.
The thing I liked best is the plans/menus seem reasonable. The snack option on one of the sample days was a small bag of chips (I am also a chip junkie) and another snack option was a small scoop of ice cream. Some of the other diets out there don't have these treats. And, if I am going to try to stick to one of these plans, I really need my treats. Now at the end of the day, I will either have an individual bag of chips or a low fat ice cream sandwich. I really look forward to that.
And, to get me through the day, I do have a couple sugar free butterscotch candies too.
I'll repost when I can get home and get the title of the book.
Good Luck!
The book I have is "The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Guide to Losing Weight: The Only Authoritative Guide to Weight Loss Using the Glycemic Index" by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller, Kaye Foster-Powell, Stephen Colagiuri, and Johanna Burani. Here's an amazon link: Amazon
I have to admit, I didn't read it cover to cover (even though it is a small book). I just got the concepts and use the sample plan as a good base. It is working pretty well so far. And, it doesn't feel so much like a "diet" which is nice.
I just got back from the first visit from the RE. He was very helpful and did a ton of bloodwork. Right now, he said his gut feeling is I do not even have PCOS. He asked if I knew what made my gynecologist think that. I said the only indicator was the LH:FSH ratio. He thought that was strange as that isn't the best indicator for PCOS. I didn't fast so I have to go back tomorrow to finish some more bloodwork and I am also going to have the ultrasound in a couple weeks to make sure. For now I will continue with the metformin but he said that my dosage is so low that if I have PCOS, the metformin might not be helping anyway. And, I am definitely going to have to increase my thyroid medication based on tests I took a couple months ago but he'll confirm with today's results.
He also said there was more of an indication that I was ovulating than not and that I should continue testing as he felt the predictor tests would be accurate for me.
Still have the TTC issues though. My DH's SA results were not good and the dr suggested that might be the main issue for us. DH is going to retake that and if we get the same results, it looks like we will be going pretty quickly to IVF.
For now, I am happy to have a few answers and anxious to get all the test results back!
