I been trying to avoid Metformin especially knowing all the side affects and what seems to be never ending stomach problems. But i just want to lose this weight NOW! I been dieting and i am stuck on a 5 pd loss that goes up and down by the day. I just dont care anymore...almost...i feel like crap anyway, so i might as well lose weight doing it. I have been considering trying it out for like 6 months so i can lose the weight i want then stop and just continue on my diet....Now what happens it you only take it for like 6 months? Taking it , is there any reason for me to still be doing no sugar/carb diet? Like can i chill out and eat some white beard and it wont make a difference? I just heard sooooooo many mixed reviews, so people who lost a ton of weight real quick and others who are sick like dogs and it makes no difference..... I just really dont know what to do but i cant take these extra 60 pounds anymore and i am sick of feeling like i straving all the time because i cant find anything i like to eat that doesnt have bread involved or sugar..... Im suffering and having no results so i just about cant take it anymore. So tell me girls, is the Met gonna really make a difference?

It made a difference with me. I lost 7 lbs in 1.5 mos. I am no longer hungry and constantly thinking about food. The Met is less bothersome if you eat a healthy diet, so give it a try and you will have less s/e if you do a low carb/higher protein diet.
I am finding that I can tolerate more and more things the longer I am on it. I can have white bread and even ice cream if I want, but I have to say I don't really have the junkfood cravings anymore.
Like you, I was suffering and seeing no results. I was on a 1200 calorie Jenny Craig diet and not losing ANY weight, just the 5 lbs up/5 lbs down thing. I was even exercising3x a week. Now I am losing just with diet alone. I haven't been able to fit Curves in like I used to, but I need to work on that and I think I will lose even more weight.
I think if you combine healthy eating with a little exercise and Met, you should see fantastic results.
Good luck to you and feel better,
Barbara

I agree with Barbi about combining Met with exercise and diet. I want to add also, that Met helps in more ways than weight loss, since there are other health risks related with IR that need to be controlled, and Met can help with them.
Also, a gradual increase in dose may help reduce the bad side effects. I was put on 250mg for two weeks, then up by 250mg every two weeks after that, until I got to the required dose. My doc said a gradual increase would help with side effects, and I never had any to worry about.
Hope this helps,
Michelle

The met has really helped me shed pounds. I was hardly able to lose anything until I started it, and that was with following a very strict diet! I've been on it since March, I've lost almost 20 pounds, (could have lost more if I actually stuck to my diet through most of it), I feel so much better. I have had NO side effects from it, which is unusual for me. I always have side effects from medication.
I'm getting back to my diet today and hope to see the scale start moving again. The other thing I've noticed with the met is that I don't seem to gain back weight as quickly. Before if I went off my diet (weight watchers) I'd gain back like 5 pounds in a week. Now I've been off for about a month, and really pigging out (PMS) and only gained back 2. Not bad. So it seems easier to maintain now too!

Met on it's own was very limited for me. When I started eating to control my insulin and exercising with it, it was like a new drug.
For me personally, my Dr is keeping me on a dose of met for the rest of my life, not as a short-term weight loss plan. My goal is healthy hormones and since my hormones are very difficult to move, and hormone issues started when I was a teen an very thin, he knows that just because I've hit and maintained my goal weight, that my hormone problems aren't over.
If your hormones are an ongoing issue and your goal isn't just thin-ness, but hormonal health, it may take more than a short term plan of meds to manage your hormones and you should speak to your Dr. about your own situation.
