Right I feel stuck in a rut. Infact, I'm not even sure that’s the right terms for it. However.
I’m nearly 19, and I feel like I should maybe be taking some actions towards choosing a career path. I currently work silly hours in the airport for crap wages. People think check in agents is all glamour n so on, but its not, it kills your social life and I’ve had enough.
I just feel like there is so much I want to do but don’t know how to go about it. Midwifery ahs always has been my dream. but I always hear about those who have done the 3 years at university only to not get a job and find it hard to get a job due to lack of experience.
Lately I’ve wanted to join immigration or the police.
I just feel like in 15 years time ill probably still be in the airport, n to be honest I’ve got a bit too much brains for it all. Just don’t know exactly what I want to be doing. Should I go to university and get the midwifery n take the chance of not getting a job and being left with 3 years of university for nada, or do I start little and work my way up in a company?
I also want to travel see the world. Basically do all the things my mum n dad didn’t do.
I am confused!!!
How did you come about your career?

I'm not a career minded person I've only ever worked in the NHS or the Civil Service - I've never been unemployed in the 20 years since I left school.
Frankly, work is just a means to an end for me....I work to get paid, so that I can buy lots of lipgloss and dvd's
If I won a sh!tload of money then I'd pack it in and go to college to learn hairdressing, and then I'd set up my own salon. It's always been a dream of mine and I really wish I'd went straight into that after i left school.
I'm starting a night school course in September - manicure and pedicure, which will lead me to do a course in nail sculpture (false nails to you and me ), I might end up doing other beautician courses later on too.
So my advice to you is to go for it while you're still young and have no major commitments holding you back. Follow the dream babes!
Good luck with what you choose, I know you'll do well!

It is a pain when you come to a cross roads in your life and you don’t know which way to turn I know how you feel because I have been there and done that !! I really think that you should do some thing like Midwifery I know that you have to study for about there years but it can be a very rewarding career, ok so your worried about not being able to get a job at the end of your course but who is to say that will happen to you ?? Two of my friends have just passed their degrees in nursing and have been successful in getting a job and I am sure that will happen to you too, you could even take a gap year in uni to go travelling.
I have to say that is my biggest regret not going to uni because it is a whole different life !! I know that I have done well for myself now (I am an engineering field), and I am in a good job that pays well but it has taken me a long time to get where I am now. Your 19 years old don’t spend your life working in a job with crap pay, hoping that some one along the line will notice your potential and give you a promotion, go to uni, get an educated, travel the world do all the things your parents didn’t get to do !!!
If midwifery is what you want to do go for it now.... Seriously.
Ideally I would love to train as a midwife...but I'm committed to a mortgage etc and can't affort not to have any income while I train. I hope to do it eventually, but it won't be for a while. Do it now....
I know the Prospects website says it's for people who are already graduates, but if you put "midwifery" into their search engine, for example, quite a lot comes up.
As someone who has been to university and is still doing a postgraduate degree, I think that studying is a fantastic opportunity. It really gives you the time and space to stretch yourself, learn new stuff, plus almost an unrivalled chance to meet new people and have a great social life! You can travel in the long holidays (at least for most courses; I don't know about midwifery because some of the medical courses are quite different). Having worked already will probably make you more mature than many students who go straight from school and find it difficult to be self-disciplined.
On the other hand, especially with the new tuition fees, I think it is important to have an idea in your mind of what you want to do afterwards, work reasonably hard, get work experience, etc. Just having a degree doesn't enable you to wander into a brilliant career with no effort, and you have to consider how you'll live while you study (will your parents support you, or do you start saving from that airport job now?!).
I suspect that if you're not satisfied with your job now, that won't improve by itself. You want a change, and you should probably go for it, but think carefully which path to take.
I feel like just now I’m trying to sort my life out, get a career behind me, but something that I am going to enjoy doing. Don’t get me wrong I love the folk I work with and the job is actually not too bad, it’s just the working at 3am that REALLY gets me. Cuts your social life right off.
I’ve applied for nursing mainly because my mum had been getting on at me about what I want to do with my life and did it to keep her quiet; I want to change it to midwifery real bad now.
Also considered joining immigration control, think it would be a VERY interesting place to work! Plus you get paid to come to work and be a *****! I do the ***** part for free already so....ha-ha
Just want some one to show me a crystal ball showing where I’ll be in 15 years!
But thank ya ladies

You should definitely make the change now before you have responsibilities, like all the other girls have said.

Hello - I can so relate to 'career' dilemas - I never had a clue about what to do once I left school - all I really knew was that I was lucky enough to get good exam results (although did do some studying too!) and was able to get into Uni.
There was a few things that I really fancied doing - but as I was leaving home at 17 from a relatively rural place - I was determined to do something that would have a job at the end of it - as I didn't want to end up back at home being a burden to the folks. So I wracked my brains and came up with something that would definitely see me with a 'career' after and there was plenty of jobs around. My mum did influence me in this way - I don't think she realised she was doing it - but she did say to most suggestions... are there any jobs in it?
Of course getting a job afterwards IS an important criteria - but it shouldn't be your only one...
I left school - started my degree - really didn't enjoy it but persevered with it and five years later I was qualified (there might be a clue in my 'nick' what in). I entered the work force and found that I still didn't really enjoy it... again persevered - till I was really 'suffering' for it. Eventually aged 30 I realised that there was a hell of a long way to go till I could retire so I put into place a plan to get out of that career.
I'm now just about finished my first year back at Uni with another three years ahead - in a completely different degree - and I'm loving it. It's in something I did consider as a teenager but dismissed due to the are there jobs in it thing. I guess I'm going the long way round to get there - but I'm determined to get there!
I guess what I'm trying to say is - if there's something that really holds your interest - go for it - if you're prepared that finding a job afterwards might mean a bit of a fight - then it can still be worth it if it's something that you enjoy.
Hope you find something to give you that challenge and happiness
Please dont shoot the boyfriend who wondered into the wrong room!!!
If you are thinking of the police, just to give a little info, start now!!!!
I applied to join tayside police well over two years ago now, it took them a year to get back to me, passed all the testing and intial interviews, then waited 6mths to find out my final interview is the end of this month, then still have physical and medical to get through, i was told by the HR guy though that places at the training college are limited and they are waiting for guys to retire so they can fill their position quickly!!
So, if you are interested in the police as a long term thing then fill in forms now and get the process started!!!
Hope you find something you like though!
