Lightbulb confussed

ok I need help I am so confused, I had my doctors assistant change my prescription from 1500mg of metformin to the metformin ER. Well when I picked up my prescription the bottle only had 30 pills of 500mg and it said to just take one a day. So I called the doctor's assistant back and told her that before I was taking 3 pills of 500 mg a day before and I thought that the dosage wouldn't change just that instead of taking 3 times a day I had to take it once. So she said she would call it in to the pharmacy. Well I go to pick it up today and the pharmacist tells me that my doctor called and said that one day was what I was suppossed to take because it is time released and that would act just like the 1500mg. Now this is whewre I am confussed because I thought that you were supposed to take the same dosage? I am so lost and my doctors office is closed today. Can anyone help?

Elizabeth,

I don't blame you for being confused. Your doc, unfortunately, is wrong. 500 mg of XR is not the same as 1500 mg of regular Met. The only difference is with the XR you have a slower release of the med into your bloodstream. This is a tough situation, because docs don't like to hear someone say they are wrong. Maybe KY or Christy can point you to some kind of document explaining the dosage comparisons that you can show your doc to help educate him.

Yep, I take Gluc xr 1500 a day and I take 3 pills of 500 mg each at bedtime.

You are going to have to convince them to call the pharmacy again
