I also have been looking into different options and I'm so undecided. There is so much information out there and soooo many different opinions. I'm not going to do anything for the next three months but research. Over the last couple years I have changed my eating habits for the most part. I still have my days when chocolate and carbs seem to jump out of the pantry at me, but I try not to eat processed foods, pasta, sugar, breads or dairy. I'm pretty restricted on what I eat and I try to make that organic. In the beginning I lost 13 pounds and there I remain. I don't exercise as much as I should, but I do exercise about three times a week in some way. It gets so depressing at times! I have friends who try to encourage me by dieting with me. They lose 30 pounds and I lose one. I guess the thing that worries me is that I might have the surgery, and still not lose the hundred pounds that needs to go. I currently have a close friend who had the band a year and half ago. She needed to lose 130 or so and has lost 60 and can't seem to lose anymore. Another friend had gastric, lost 140 pounds but has gradually gained back 50 of that. I don't want to go through that much pain just to gain it back!

ReJon - You can't decide on a WLS procedure for you based souly on others experiences. You need to weigh the pros/cons for each surgery available to you and & your individual weight loss needs and discuss this with a qualified bariatric surgeon. Weight regain is possible with each surgery, as is not reaching goal. WLS in any form is only a tool, not a cure and if you're dedicated you'll be successful. I'm almost 5 years out from my RNY and although I've got almost 20lbs to get back to goal, I also just had a baby 4m ago and am working on loosing my baby weight. I know lots of WLSers who are still at goal/near goal at 4-5 years post op.

Good luck & of course if you have questions...ask away!

Thanks Goddess. I'm looking around this area for a surgeon and I think I'll go in for consultation. A lot depends on my insurance coverage but I'm going to go ask the pros and cons anyways.

What surgery was it you had done? How much weight and how long did it take to lose?

I had the Roux-En-Y aka RNY aka gastric bypass. I had a total of 114lb to loose and was at goal of 114lb lost at 1 year post op. I lost quickly in the beginning and had lost 100lbs in 6 months and then my weight loss slowed WAY down and it took me another 6 months to loose 14lbs.

I am considering the lapband after years of trying everything i'm finally at the point that I need to do something. I'm switching insurances in a month so i'm sure i'll have to wait a little and am in the middle of a move but will be going to a free seminar right after I move in. I am pretty sure I want the lapband. I just want to be healthy.

I've not heard of the 'balloon'...would this be the lapband as it has an inflatable band that goes around the stomach to create restriction?

I have a lapband. I have seen the good and the bad sides of it. My surgery was in May 08. I have dropped 40lbs...I got pg naturally in Aug 08 after 5 1/2 years of ttc. I took clomid and got pg twice and lost both pg prior to my surgery. I honestly feel that without my band I would not have had my DD.

My DD was born at the end of April and I started getting my fills replaced in July. Honestly I have only dropped a few pounds since then, but I know I haven't been following my plan as I should.

My DH just had lapband surgery as well and the weight is falling off him...of course. Also my MIL has one and she has lost 100 lbs.

Melissa - Congrats on your banding. Your story is like other lapband PCOSers I know. Good luck getting the baby weight off. I had RNY and after 2 babies in 2 years the baby weight is not coming off easily for me either.

I am considering the sleeve as well. I just started to look at physicians here in the Houston area, but also two Mexican surgeons. I will have to self pay and the price difference is a factor. Plus there are lots of people I have found on WLS forums that choose to go to Mexico and have great results.

Andrea- I am in the Houston area. My MIL, DH and I have all used Dr. Fernando Miranda. He is really nice and very knowledgable. His office has a 100% approval rate as well. The only negative is sometimes you have to wait a long time in the waiting area for appointments. I know he does the sleeve, but he also does the bypass, lapband and one other I can't think of.

He also takes patients who just need fills. And he offers good prices for them. I have met several people who use him for fills after having surgery in Mexico.

Good luck!

Deciding to do WLS is one of the most difficult decisions! I was scared to death even up until the point I was knocked out on the operating table. What kept me going and motivated to have RNY over 4 years ago was being even more afraid of dying. Now I look back on it as the best thing I ever did for myself and don't regret it one signle minute! I have lost over 200lbs and am now at a BMI of 23. Never thought I'd see those numbers....ever! I wish you the best of luck with your decision.
