Default Considering WLS

I am considering WLS after being dx with PCOS for 10 years. i am having new, more scary problems with my health, like HTN, heart palpitations, and h/o blood clot. My dad died at 61 of massive heart attack, which is scary. i want to be around for my kids, and be healthier so we can have lots of fun for many years. WLS used to scare me, but now I think it may be what I very well need.

Any thoughts??

I have been contemplating it for a while as well & I have an appt for Sept 7th for the RE to start ttc process & I am hoping he does npt tell me I need to lose my 100 pounds before we start! If I were to go for WLS it would definately be the lap band it seems to be the safest way & its very effective I know a couple people who had it done & no regrets & they feel awesome! I also suffer from HTN, palplatations and the list goes on & Im only 26!!How many pounds over weight r u?

I have also been comtemplating WLS for awhile now. I have already been to the informational meeting and have twice cancelled my appointment for the consultation with the doctor. I have done tons of research and actually worked on a WLS floor at a hospital, but I am obviously still not ready. Dealing with the PCOS and other health issues, I am just so scared that I would be one of the people that had complications and I just couldnt handle that right now. I would definately do the gastric bypass, because my hope would be to have surgery once and then be done, where as with the lap band you eventually have to go back under and you have so many follow up appointments. Sorry this was so long, but WLS is something that I think about alot.

Be sure to check in with the WLS Divas. They can provide lots of information about the various procedures.

Please continue to do research, talk to people, and really put an effort in to changing your lifestyle. WLS changes your stomach size, not your thinking or the reasons behind eating. I'm heavy enough to qualify for WLS, but i would never do it, partly because i know i could lose weight if i really stuck to a healthier lifestyle, which i don't do consistently. The other reason is that i watched my brother, who was 32, suffer immeasurably in an ICU for over 18 months before he died because of complications of WLS. I also am an ER nurse, and though my hospital does not do the surgery, i get multiple patients a month who have long term complications from the surgery, and have yet to meet a single person who was happy that they had it or had no problems afterwards (i also have multiple friends and family who have had it). I'm not saying it does'nt have it's place, i just find it so sad that you hear so much about how great it is, but SO little is available about the reality of the serious complications and deaths that have resulted.

I cannot remember who aksed how many pounds overweight I am, but the answer is about 138. I need to lose a whole person. It is something I have struggled with my whole life, but it just seems to be worse in the last 5 years or so.

I know there are lots of complications. I appreciate your reply, Nurse Jackie. I know that had to be hard watching your brother go thru that. I am a nurse, too, but I only worked in geriatrics after my LPN. I worked in the hospital as a CNA, but that was before GBP took off. I work for a company now that does health calls for insurance companies, and I have heard lots of horror stories, about both GBP and lapband. So I appreciate your honesty. I guess I am in that weighing benefits V. risks stage.

BTW, check out obesityhelp.com , it is a great site for all the WLS info you'll ever need!!! You can ask anything, and there is lots of info, so that you can make sure that WLS is really what you want to do and weigh the pros & cons! Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck!!!!

Default appt scheduled

I am seeing a doctor on September 4th regarding the lap band procedure. I have been struggling with weight all my adult life and diet/exercise have helped me lose 20 lbs but that's all. No matter what I try, nothing seems to work any better. I always lose initially and then stop.

I recently found out that I have hypertension and type II diabetes. I need to get rid of some of the weight, so i'm going for it.
