Default cooking brown rice

well, i'm a terribe cook - fact! i'm used to just buying and eating crap that's already prepared for me. but for the sake of my health, i'm not doing that anymore. i haven't been having much luck with cooking brown rice. it's either too hard or soggy and gross so i don't want to eat it. what am i doing wrong? also, what can i do with it to make it taste good?

You can soak it before you cook it and it helps soften it up a bit. I usually soak mine for an hour. I use 1 cup of rice to 2 or 2.5 cups of water. Optionally, you can add some salt and a TB of butter. Once it comes to a boil, I let it boil for a bit -- maybe six minites -- and then I reduce the heat and simmer for 45 to 50 minutes.

Keep in mind, that brown rice doesn't resemble each other at all in texture!!

This is exactly what I do and soaking it makes a BIG difference. I add a ching of olive oil rather than butter.

We do the same - soaking before cooking, then rinse and cook as listed on the package. We use a teaspoon of extra virgin coconut oil instead of butter or olive oil.
You could also use chicken/veg/meat broth when cooking it.
You could add some frozen peas & carrots while cooking too.

Ohhhh coconut oil....where would you find that? Does it give the rice a coconut taste? Hmmmmm I must find some of that.

I buy the extra virgin coconut oil at my local health food store. Make sure that it is extra virgin though, the other stuff is too waxy and isn't as good for you.

Do any of you own a rice cooker? I don't, but a friend of mine does, and her rice always turns out perfect! I haven't tried any brown rice out of it however. I guess some brands might be expensive, but you could probably shop around for a more reasonably-priced one, and it would take any "guesswork" out of cooking rice.

My mother cooks perfect rice in a plain ol' casserole dish. I've tried cooking rice the same way she does, and I *still* can't get it right. Maybe it's a secret Mom thing...

i started out mixing white and brown so it doesnt taste so bad and then lessoning the ratio of white to brown.... but you have to soak the brown first so it doesnt stay crunchy and the white soft... there are lots of ways to flavor, you may want to look up some recipies for rice that add some falvor... me personlay, i always mix it with beans, so thats my flavor

They now have instant brown rice. You cook it about 10 mins and let it sit for 5 then your good to go. Its petty good too. Try making it using canned tomatoes, YUMMY! Peace and health!

wow... this is an old thread...

different brands of brown rice are better than others... I like whole foods 6696 country blend best

add rice to water, bring water to boil, stir, put lid on, turn down heat to low, cook for 45 min
