My Mood: Points: 84,137.94 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 84,137.94 | cooking brown rice well, i'm a terribe cook - fact! i'm used to just buying and eating crap that's already prepared for me. but for the sake of my health, i'm not doing that anymore. i haven't been having much luck with cooking brown rice. it's either too hard or soggy and gross so i don't want to eat it. what am i doing wrong? also, what can i do with it to make it taste good? |

I use 1 cup of rice to 2 or 2.5 cups of water. Optionally, you can add some salt and a TB of butter. Once it comes to a boil, I let it boil for a bit -- maybe six minites -- and then I reduce the heat and simmer for 45 to 50 minutes.
Keep in mind, that brown rice doesn't resemble each other at all in texture!! |

This is exactly what I do and soaking it makes a BIG difference. I add a ching of olive oil rather than butter.

You could also use chicken/veg/meat broth when cooking it.
You could add some frozen peas & carrots while cooking too.

I haven't tried any brown rice out of it however. I guess some brands might be expensive, but you could probably shop around for a more reasonably-priced one, and it would take any "guesswork" out of cooking rice.
My mother cooks perfect rice in a plain ol' casserole dish. I've tried cooking rice the same way she does, and I *still* can't get it right. Maybe it's a secret Mom thing...

different brands of brown rice are better than others... I like whole foods 6696 country blend best
add rice to water, bring water to boil, stir, put lid on, turn down heat to low, cook for 45 min |
