Question Costs?

Hi I am new to all of this adoption. I was wondering the amount (ruffly) it would cost my husband and I to adopt a child? Do you have to have "perfect" credit, a lot of saved money, etc... I just have a bunch of questions and I live in IL and there's really not a lot of places for me to go and ask? I realize there are diff. agencies, places, etc... but just curious to where we need to go to get the answers we need? Thanks so much! God Bless All Of You!!!

I live in Canada. Govt (public) adoptions are free or low cost which means an older child with special needs. Private adoption agencies (newborns) are 10, 000ish and international are 20, 000ish.

That's a really open-ended question....

It all depends on: what state you live in, if you're going to adopt from the state or private, if you're going to adopt internationally, if internationally-what country.

We're adopting from China and it will be about $25,000. That includes travel for 3 to China. It also includes 4 extra days in Boston as well as all the paperwork that we've had to fed-ex back and forth.

I know you can adopt from your state from much less but it can take longer, especially if you want a newborn.

We don't have the best credit in the world and we've had no issues. For China (that's all I know about) you need to make $10,000 per person in your house, per year. So for a married couple adopting 1 child you would have to make atleast $30,000.

There's a great thread at the top of the forum that has some links to different adoption issues.

Ask away if you're interested in China (it's all I know about)!

Good Luck!
Traci

The cost of adoptions vary from state to state and from domestic to international. If you are really interested and money is an issue you might call your county's department of social services. I think adopting through DSS is probably the most affordable way to go. They most likely will have an informational meeting that you can go to that is free that will explain the process for your state. Good luck on your search!!! Oh and to answer your question about how we are able to afford this we are taking out a home equity loan and then my husband's company also gives an adoption stipend, then there's also a federal tax credit of $10,000 also so that's how we're swinging things. My dad wants another grandbaby so bad he's also offered to loan us some money if need be. Good luck to you! Don't get overwhelmed by the numbers. If this is something you want to do you can find a way to make it happen I'm sure!

go to the sticky adoption resources at top of board to start researching the answers to all your questions. if you already know what type of adoption you want to go for we can help you out more here but without that info we can't tell you much.

i am doing a single parent older child domestic adoption, and i have craptastic credit and do not own a home, if that helps put your own credit into perspective.

take care! read up!

Well, we don't have an exact amount yet for our domestic adoption. We're estimating $15-18K. Of that figure, $10,300 is an exact. The rest is our estimate of legal fees & travel expenses & an estimated birthmom allowance. We had very little money saved; however, we took advantage of some investments. The adoption credit will be very helpful in compensating some of the expenses we had to pay. Like the others said, it varies greatly depending upon which adoption route you take, which agency you use, where the bm is from, etc, etc.

Good luck!

Hi, that's a hard question to answer because of the route you want to go with a adoption.

But I just wanted to let you know that I also live in Illinois. Southern Illinois and if you live in Southern Illinois and want to know any information on adoption etc you can pm and I'd be glad to chat with you about the adoption option. Good luck with your decision.
