I've noticed mention of the Couch to 5k program in a couple of threads recently. If you aren't familiar with it, it is a program designed to help non-runners (or novices like me) gradually build up to running 5k over the course of 9 weeks.
There is a training schedule set up that alternates jogging and walking for each week. And there are several podcasts that you can download that have music and verbal cues for when to walk vs jog. One is just music, no voice if you'd prefer.
I have wanted to do this before, then haven't taken the leap. But I have heard lots of people sing the praises of it on various sites. So, I'm ready to give it a shot.
Anyone want to commit to doing this with me? I am excited about the idea of becoming a runner!
I've been downloading podcasts, and think that my running schedule will be Wed., Fri, and Sunday mornings.

We could officially kick off on Sunday. I've been having fun listening checking out some of the links on that c25k site. I've just been listening to a running podcaster talk about the program. It's encouraging.
Have you done any running before?

So I'm not quite ready to start the Couch to 5k yet. When I started this weight loss adventure, I set a goal of losing 30 pounds and then I'd start running. I'm 15 pounds away from that goal--and already looking at running shoes, lol. Anywho. I think I'll lurk on this thread and see how you ladies progress!
Best of luck!!!

mloverstreet: I bet you could do it now! We are capable of doing more than we usually think! If you really aren't ready for a jog/run, how bout power walking in the "jog" part of the training, and a slower walk during the walking parts? (You know I'm going to try to pull you out the door with us.) If I can do this, you can do this!
Nina: The weight I've lost so far has been following The Insulin Resistance Diet. I eat a fairly low carb menu, keep my cals around 1200 cals, and eat tons of veggies. I'm trying to eliminate processed foods as much as possible (which isn't as hard as I thought it would be). And I've been exercising a lot. I've been doing the 90 Bootcamp here, and really starting to enjoy exercise. I've been doing 2 workouts a day since the start of April. In the morning I do cardio (which is when I'll be doing my running), and some pushups, abs etc. Then in the evening, I do a second cardio workout with a dvd, and then circuit training with handweights, and some strength training. All together it seems to be changing my body and fitness level quite a bit.
I haven't ever run much before. I've always wanted to, but never felt like I could. I realize now that much of that was in my head only. I felt like it was something that super in shape people do. Like running was the end and be all of exercise. LOL. I never thought I'd be able to do it. But as my exercise has increased in recent months I've started to think that I could (I've been running on the treadmill downstairs). When I started really envying the women I'd see running past our house, I decided it was silly. I could do it too.
I've been outside running twice this week, and have really enjoyed it. It's a challenge, but it isn't killing me either. I'm excited about following the c25k program. I think the structure of it will help me.
What kind of running were you doing in the past?

I think we'll all be running on different days anyway. My plan is to run the program on Wednesday, Friday, and Sundays. (The rest of the mornings I'll do some other cardio.)
I found a neat map site last night. I'll have to locate the link again. It would let you pull up a map of your neighborhood, or wherever you'll run, and map out the distance. You put marks along your route, and it shows the distance. Fun. I'm so easily amused!

not to butt in...the website you are looking at may be walkjogrun.net
I use it for plotting out my routes for walking

Can I join you girls? I started last week and will be doing my second run of Week 2 today. Woo hoo!
I started C25K last year too and got to about Week 6 or 7 before I got pregnant and had to stop. I've been looking forward to getting back to it ever since, lol! I never thought running would be my thing, but I think it just might be. I actually look forward to it and honestly am motivated to not only finish the program, but to get myself to a point where I can run on a daily basis.
Where is everyone running? I'll be inside on the treadmill for at least the C25K program because of my two kids. I think that once DS starts kindy in September, my DD will be big enough for the jog stroller and I can maybe get outside then...
Anyone running with a dog friend? Also in the fall time, my Boxer will finally be old enough to run long(ish) distances with me. The vet said it was too early until she's about 18 months old, so we'll probably be ready at the same time, lol! She's going to love it so much, this dog has SO much energy it's ridiculous!
I'm excited to get going with you guys!

coolrunning.com was bought out by active.com over Christmas...the transition was horrible.
I recommend kickrunners.com
They have the c25k up there too...plus a very supportive community.
If you sign up put tithers as your reference.
I've been there over a year....I mod the multisport forum...
Good luck on your journey to your 5k! It will be AWESOME!
