Oh, I'm glad there are so many of us wanting to do this. And I'm glad a few who have already gotten started. The more the merrier!

I went out this morning and jogged/walked 3 miles. I wanted to get sort of a baseline of where I'm starting at fitness-wise. It wasn't too bad. (Meaning I was still upright when I got home.) I'll be excited to see how my endurance improves in the next 9 weeks. I'm looking forward to the challenge of it.

I'm going to have to get some new running duds. I don't think I'm quite up for shorts yet (a bit too much jiggle). But my long yoga pants are going to be hot as it gets hotter here. I need to look for some options. I have new shoes, and love them. And I have podcasts downloaded and ready on the mp3. So, I'm about set to go.

Those of you who have already started, how is it going for you? Any thoughts on the first or second weeks?

Laura

Ladies-the thing that works for me to keep training in line is to sign up for a goal race...so check your calendars and check out the races...

A great place to search for local races is:

Double DOG DARE you. Now you really have no choice what-so-ever.

I've been eyeing the schedules for my area too. I just can't make myself sign up for one called "The Beer Belly 5K" . I need a name with good bragging rights.

You'll probably be fine the first week, especially since you survived a 3 mile walk/run on your own. The step between the first week and the second is so slight that you'll harldy notice the difference. I'll be doing the last day of week 2 tomorrow and moving on to week 3 on Monday. Have fun!

Well, I went out and did a Week One run this morning. It really wasn't too bad. I was prepared for much worse.(Why is it that I have such a mental block about running, like I expect it will do me in?) LOL. I found that the 60 seconds of running intervals went quite quickly. I have been running intervals on the treadmill for a while now, but haven't been timing them, just pushing as much as I could. I'm guessing that I've been doing the equal of week one for some time now. Really, I think what I've been doing is longer runs, but longer recovery in between too.

That being said, I did find that running outside was harder than inside. I felt it in my calves and shins. The motion to propell forward was different from the moving belt of the treadmill. I will need to be careful to stretch better than I have been.

One thing I did that was kind of funny was that I went out and started a loop through the neighborhood. I wasn't paying attention to the time, was listening to the podcast, and when the run ended, I was over 1.5 from the house still. I stood there and laughed for a second. Then I finished the distance mostly power walking, with a few runs in too. But I obviously didn't work it out so that I'd be almost home at the end of the podcast. If I want that to happen, I'll have to map a different route.

So, I'll be going back out on Sunday. My plan is Sun, Wed, Fri.

How is everyone else doing? When are the other week one'ers starting next week?

Laura

That's pretty funny. That happened to me once, and I actually contemplated calling my dad to come from HIS house to take me to MY house. And then I thought, "I'll NEVER hear the end of it...." So I just trekked home on my own. It wasn't so bad...

Kat, that is a riot! (And I will admit that I had a brief thought of calling dh crossed my mind.)

In college I had a friend who was a runner. This was before we had cell phones in our pockets too (goodness I sound old). One day she called me at the dorm, giggling away, and asked if I'd come pick her up. She had gone out for a run, gotten into a "zone" and just kept going on some pretty backroads. Then when it was time to run back to campus, she was exhausted. So she saw an old lady out in her vegetable garden and asked to use her phone. When I arrived, they were having ice water on the front porch. We all had a good laugh.

Laura: I also sorta consider running like the ultimate athletic exercise, like there's no way I could be capable of it. Not me, that's skinny people stuff. I'm trying hard to keep that kind of internal feedback to a minimum because it doesn't do me any good... I have to channel my stubborn streak and say -- the F I'm not capable, pshaw! --

I did my final run of week 2! Since my baby was still napping and DS was glued to the TV (bad mom!) I walked an extra 30 minutes and ran for a solid 5 just for the heck of it.

To everyone:

So here's my thinking on the 5K in January. If I stick to the C25K program, theoretically I'd be 5K ready by July right? That's nearly six months before the event in San Diego... So I started thinking that a 10K isn't really that much of a stretch if I had 6 months to get ready after already being capable of the 5K.
THEN- I started thinking that a 14K isn't that much further than 10K. Am I on the crack pipe big time, or is that possible? Should I aim for a 15K in January instead of the 5?

*inserting INSANE daydream of finishing the Rock and Roll marathon next June*

Vanessa, I am trying to do the exact same thing, get stubborn and dig into it. If someone else told me that I couldn't run, I'd say "just watch me", and do it just to prove them wrong.

I'm funny that way. I don't take negativity from others, but I've taken a lot of it from myself over the years. I spent a long time telling myself that I couldn't exercise certain ways, or for long durations, and that I'd be fat forever. Then I proved myself wrong during Bootcamp, and have been literally exercising my butt of. I can do it. I can be slim and healthy, and enjoy exercise! So, I'm trying to change my internal feedback to positive challenges now. I'm daring myself to do this C25K. When I run, I'm saying to myself over and over "just watch me".

As for your plans for upcoming races. I bet you can do any of them that you want! Seems like your training would be right on target for them.
