Default Could husband cause lose???

I have a weird question that my husband and I talked about last night and just wanted some insight. We just lost our second baby last week, the first was in April. Anyway, we were wondering if bad sperm could cause a miscarriage. This time around we got to see that heartbeat at 8 weeks but by 10 I stated to spot and went it and there was no heartbeat. The reason why we are asking is this, my husband smoke about a pack to a pack and a half a day plus he drinks. He isn't an alcoholic but he does drink often. I on the other had do neither. We want to try to put a reason with the lose of are babies and are just exploring every possibility. The first time I honestly think no baby developed at all, it was very early, I started to spot 3 days after I found out and by the time I went to the doctor a week later I was already haveing the miscarriage. This time of course was very much harder due to knowing there was a baby with a real heartbeat, the doctor said that day that it was very strong and looked great. Come to find out just a week later the baby died and we didn't even know it.
My doctor did tell me that the next time he wants to try progestrone. He wont do any genetic testing though until after 3. He told us that he is pretty sure that cause of this one is the lack of progestrone.
So if anyone has any insight please let us know.

Hello,

I am very sorry about your losses, ***HUGS***

I do not believe that you or DH could have done anything to cause miscarriage. But certainly he should try and stop those things. If he smokes around you, that will not be healthy for both you, or a baby. Smoking can decrease sperm count also.

I don't believe his habits attributed to your losses, if it was a "bad sperm" issue, then it would likely have been a problem with the conception... meaning, either you wouldn't get pregnant, or the loss would have happened soon after conception. However, I think that "bad sperm" would likely prevent conception. But, I am not an expert, these are my opinions.

Sometimes things just happen, and trying to find an answer causes more stress. Trying to point blame on DH, or yourself isn't going to help anything. Its only going to create harsh feelings, guilt and anger. Your DH does need to cut back on smoking, but its for over all health reasons, and that of your future child.

My friend just lost her 2nd baby. She had $1000.00 dollars worth of blood work drawn yesterday. She can get pregnant with no problem, but she miscarries shortly after the heartbeat starts. I will let you know what she finds out, maybe you can see if the doctor will check you for the same thing. ***HUGS***

Default **pregnancy / living child mentioned **

Hi there. I am sorry for your losses.

I am not a doctor, but I had 3 losses before having a successful pregnancy so I may be able to share some insight. I had many of the same questions that you typed above.

My RE said that usually, if a sperm is bad, it swims slower than the "good" sperm. The "good" sperm get to the egg first, thus decreasing chances that a bad sperm will fertilize it.

With that being said, smoking, drinking and will decrease sperm count and/or quality. It takes sperm about 90 days to develop and mature, so if he quits now, the sperm will be healthier in 3 months!

For progesterone...your OB can test your progesterone at about 7 days past ovulation. I believe that as long as your post-ovulatory progesterone level is over 10, it can support a pregnancy, although most OBs will give supplements if it's under 15.

Now...I had 3 losses in 7 months. My first loss was at 10 weeks, after we had seen a heartbeat. After my 3rd loss, my OB decided to run "recurrent pregnancy loss" testing on me. (My DH had to do a high-tech sperm sample test too.) I had a hysteroscopy and had about 7 vials of blood drawn. Turned out I had a blood clotting factor that was causing miscarriages. During my 4th pregnancy, I took a baby aspirin each day and also did blood thinners. If you'd like to see how my 4th pregnancy turned out...look at the little miracle in my avatar. Today, 11-10, is his 10-month birthday.

It's crap that a doctor will make you wait to have 3 losses before allowing the "Recurrent Pregnancy Loss" testing. However, maybe since you've seen a heartbeat and then had a loss, your doc will consider it. It's worth asking for. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out. Please hang in there and don't give up hope.
