Default Could i have diabetes?

Hi all

I went in to hospital 2 nights ago for something not related to pcos and they did a blood sugar test?? it was 6.8 i asked if that was normal because she was looking strangly at it. she asked if i had had anything sugary and i hadnt. She said it was high for someone without diabetes but normal for someone with it. Is it possible i have it (no one else in my family has it)?

I am confused about it, should i see the doctor about it?

Many thanks
Pam

Hi Pam

If it was mentioned that it was a little unusual for someone without diabetes to have such a reading I think it's best to go and get checked out at the doctors. It's always best to know these things!

take care,

Caroline

Hi Pam

Are you insulin resistent? That may have something to do with the high reading...

Hi Pam

The blood sugar test will tell you if you are insulin resistant, as well as all the other hormone tests that your endo will run.

Many of us who have PCOS are also insulin resistant - it goes with the territory unfortunately. Metformin (a diabetes drug) is given to us to keep our blood sugar levels under control. Being insulin resistant isn't the end of the work and can be controlled by the food we eat and the metformin.

Either way you will have your results soon enough and will be able to get the blood sugar levels regulated. There is a diet book called the insulin resistant diet which is supposed to be very useful. Check out the Diet and Exercise board to learn more about it.

I hope things work out for you. This site is excellent - so much information in one place!

Paddy

The cut-off for diabetes (fasting blood glucose) used to be 7.8, but recently changed to 7.0. I got a 7.3 and was sent for further testing. Now I'm on metformin (test results not back yet), and get fasting readings in the 5s and low 6s.

But it all depends on what they did to you in the hospital. Some medications can make your BG spike. Were there any steroids, for example? Did she say why she was testing you BG in the first place? It could have been something they were doing to you.

Right now all you have is a question, no answers. The puzzle has a lot of pieces. What you need to do is read up on it, get tested, and make any modifications you need to make to protect your health. And if you are diabetic, just try to be happy that they caught it early while you can still protect your vision, kidneys, heart, and feet by changing a few small things in your diet and exercise.

I hope all news leads to a healtier you!

Hi

Thankyou for your advice, i am currently taking Buscopan and diclofenac and lots of painkillers because i am waiting to have my gallbladder out (hopefully soon). i started with problems 6 days after my son was born (xmas day 1999 to be exact) and have been on various meds for this since, they believe i started with this problem due to a hormone inbalance when i was pregnant (i suffered with hyperemisis gravidarum), but from what i have read in here this could just be another symptom of PCOS.
I have just finished reading a post in the newbie section about arcanthosis nigricans, i have those marks on my neck, is this another symptom of IR or diabetes? The woman who wrote the post said they are. I am going to see my GP about it on tuesday so he can maybe start tests before i see the endo again in 2 weeks. Thanks again for your advice
