Default Could this be a Metformin side effect? Either way- what should I do??

OK. This definitely falls in the TMI category, but I need advice.

Shortly after starting Met, I've had blood in my stool. It's bright red, which indicated that the bleeding is happening near the anus- but I don't get ANY on the TP unless I've had a BM. (So I guess it's not THAT close to the outside, KWIM?)

What should I do? Should I call my OBGYN or my GP? Or someone else entirely? I've never had issues with this region of my body before! LOL

It's entirely possible you have a hemorrhoid. You should be able to call whichever doctor you want, they might need you to come in for a quick checkup.

yup, hemmroids was what I was thinking too! Seeing the Dr will be a good idea- meanwhile - Does it itch or pain? if so you can use anusol (cream available over the counter) and sitz baths (again available over the counter - you soak yourself in hot or cold water for a few minutes - it really soothes. I personally prefer hot water - it brings great relief if there is pain or itch)

I JUST had this happen to me yesterday. I would say that 80% of my stool was bright red blood. I panicked because both my mom and grandma have had colon cancer. My dad told me to wait and see if it happened again and, if so, to schedule an appointment. I have had several more BMs and no more blood. If yours is pretty regular, I would make an appointment just to be on the safe side. Even if it something as small as a hemmoroid, it'll make you feel better to find out. Good luck!

Are you sure you didn't eat anything with red dye? marishino cherries, grenadine, and red pistacheos will do it!!

Definitely not dye. Thanks for the optimism, though!

It's not a one time thing- it's been almost a week now.

The only reason I *don't* think it's a hemorrhoid is b/c it doesn't bother me any other time. There's discomfort when I'm passing a BM, but that's it.

I've had a tiny tear from a large BM before, but this is not right there on the outside of the anus- it's definitely inside.

I guess a call to the doctor is in order. Man, I don't want to go THERE- but I'd hate to think it's something more serious. *sigh*

THANKS FOR THE THOUGHTS, LADIES! I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!
