Question Could my Husband be IR???

Okay, I know a man can't have PCOS...the whole "no ovary" thing makes that a little impossible. But get this:
Even before my diagnosis, my DH has understood me so well because he struggles with some of the same issues. If he doesn't extremely exercise...(running 4-5 miles a day) he gains weight...like 10-15 1bs a month. When he exercises like normal people he may stay the same or gain... same thing I experienced for 10 years pre dx. He has extreme carb cravings and binges. His father AND mother were diabetic by 30!!! His tryglycerides are always elevated. Just like me he would go on a exercising frenzy for months and drop 50 pounds or so...but no one can keep that up and so he would gain it all back again. He was chubby as a child. And, in highschool his weight helped him kick butt in football. But when he went into the Marine Corp afterwards, he dropped all his weight and felt good about himself for the first time in his life (of course, the extreme physical training did it). Now that he is out... for the the last five years...he is so demoralized. If we can't get control of this, he may have diabetes in the next 4 years!
Since my Dx, the biggest suprise was that for the first time in my life I am able to maintain my weight without torturing my self...without even being overly aware of my diet. The fortamet reduced my insane carb cravings and I can go hours without thinking of food (milestone in my life.) And with just a little exercise...the weight falls off. My DH and I both wonder if he shouldn't be on some time of metformin. We are currently trying to find a good internist who will take IR seriously, as I have been warned that not all Dr's think it is an actual disease...crazy I know! Does anyone think that this is the case with my DH...what kind of Dr should we go to...or should I talk to my RE about him...since he obviously believes in IR??????

He could be pre diabetic.
Blood sugar issues arent limited to just women, so yeah, he could have issues.
Men can take Metformin, many do to treat diabetes, so I would say to go to the doctor and ask him to do some tests.

I would recommend the doctor. I have some of the same issues you hubby has. Weight gain, high triglycerides , etc. And I actually was on crestor for a week but had a severe allergic reaction to it. But he definitely want to keep the triglycerides in check because even with a good diet and exercise it can cause a sudden heart attack.

Post GTT today!

Well, DH is going to Dr today to get the Glucose tolerance test and a full blood workup. He wasn't too thrilled when he found out the GTT was close to four hours long! I hope this gives us some answers. The Dr. said he should probably be on metformin anyway b/c both of his parent's diabetic history. Anyhoo, I'll post the results.

Hey there, how'd his Doctor's apt go? I would ask to have him checked for "Metabolic Syndrome" also known as Syndrome X. My Husband is going through trying to get a diagnosis for this right now. Although he is in the Navy and the Navy is all about hurry up and wait. My husbands Mom is diabetic and his dad has high blood pressure/cholesterol amongst other things. He really seems like he is a PCOSer. The weight is all in the middle, he's tired a lot, depressed etc. When I can get him to eat like me, he feels so much better. That means no sugar or pop and low carbs. We also eat 6 small meals a day. Lots of healthy stuff...

Ha! That is so funny...my husband is an "ex" marine, so I know all about hurry up and wait. We had the test and he got sick within 3 minutes of drinking the solution. I felt bad for him because I remember...yuck! The doctor said that if this test doesn't indicate that he has impaired glucose tolerance (which would be a big indicator of insulin resistance he said) than he said he'd give him another much shorter test for the metabolic syndrome. My husband really wants to be on Metformin...but I'm worried its just because of his weight! I want him just to be better because of his risk of heart disease and diabetes! But whatever gets him motivated I guess...
But thanks for the interest!

well if it helps i know one thing i do and my father as well is go for bike rides, in pa we have what's called "rails to trails", i think it's nation wide but it is old railroad tracks that have been removed and smothed and make for great hikes and bike rides. also try swimming, both are great things to do together and you can get a follow-a-long to bring the baby when (i'm guessing) he is old enough.
