I am a 23 year old married female and me and my husband are wanting a child.. I've been to an OB-GYN b/c I've never had regular periods. I have alot of the symptoms for PCOS and I brought it to his attention and he said that was "out of the question" so he wouldn't even consider that an option. I haven't had a period since January of this year. He put me on Provera in November 2004 and I had a cycle.. I had a cycle in December with the help of Provera and I had one in Jan. with Provera but after that he said he wasn't going to give me anymore prescriptions. He told me that we was going to "wait a few more months and I should be regulated" It is now August and I still haven't started. I called him to see if he would give me another prescription and he said NO!!! What would you suggest? Does it sound like I could have PCOS and if I do does that mean I won't ever be able to conceive a child? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

It sounds a lot like what I have had to go through I am only 17 and just found out last week that I have PCOS I had went to the OB-GYN around here for the same reason, because I have been having problems with my period I would not get it for a couple of months and when I did I would have it for almost a month, then this past time I had not had it for 7 months and I have been to the doctor 4 or 5 times and each time they would say their is nothing wrong with me and they would jsut put me on birth control. My mom had read an artical and it was on PSOC and she was determined I had it so about 2 weeks ago she got me in with another doctor which speacilizes in woman problems (no idea what it is called) and they said that is sounds like I might have it so I had to give blood and they tested me for it, and it came back positive, so they are going to now give me medication to treat it.
so the whole reason I wrote this is to tell you not to give up on trying to find out what is wrong, maby try another doctor that is what I had to do, to finally get to the bottom of it
I would try a different doctor. Even if you don't have it, he isn't doing much to help treat your presenting problem

Welcome to soul cysters - - I think you need a different doctor! Any doctor that says its out of the question isn't doing there job. One by not listening to your concerns. It may be that your doc has no clue about PCOS.
At one point I was walked over to the Psyche Ward of the hospital because I ?'ed all my doctors...Frustrating OH YEAH! If you look under the Just Dx part of the forums you will also find links of other symptoms if you have one or 2 more GET CHECKED!!! Also be very aware of what times they are doing tests. I was told by my RE that other docs were not checking at the right time of my cycles...Which causes them to do a DUHHH I HAVE NO CLUE...PCOS is nto something to be left alone.
Good luck and if you need any other info Pm me or another cyster. We are all here to help

Welcome to the message board. I would definitely see another doctor. It's pretty clear that for whatever reason, your current doctor has a very closed-mind (not a really good characteristic in a doctor...) and is not willing to provide the help that you need.
There are good doctors out there (although sometimes it doesn't seem like it!), and you will be able to find someone else who will work with you.
hi. i feel for you and see our situation is very similar. i know my body well and had been charting for over 2 years. i knew when i did and did not ovulate. then my periods became more and more sporatic. the 1st ob i went to did not listen to me at all. i felt as if i was going crazy. but this is my life and my body and my decisions. i went to another ob and she immediately tested me for pcos, put me on met and as you can see below it was successful! YEAH!
listen girl... find someone else now. find a dr. that listens, look for one that knows about womens issues and pcos. you know your body better than anyone!
if you need support please feel free to contact me ok?

Definantly try a different Doctor, god knows how many I have gone to. I am also looking for another one as I write this, because the one that I had found, that I thought would help some, then said no he couldn't help me anymore You just have to find a doctor that will actually listen to you. My problem is I know the doctors out here do not like it when you start to do your own research, and then when you ask them questions and they dont know the answers, they look like folls, so yeah, definantly try another doctor. It is your health not theirs, and that should come first and formost, above anything.

I agree with all of the other posters on this one. You NEED to find another doctor. If you are not having a period, he needs to find out why. Him allowing you to go over 6 months without a period is UNACCEPTABLE. Find another doctor and demand Provera and then a blood test on the 3rd day of your cycle to check hormones, and an ultrasound to look for cysts. If you do have PCOS, than it can be treated with BCPS (to regulate cycles, help with acne and unwanted hair) Metformin (helps with insulin resistance and weightloss). From what I understand, you also have a very good chance of conceiving with the help of fertility meds (Clomid ect.) Go over and check out the pregnancy/mommy boards there are a ton of people out there with PCOS who conceive, it just takes a little longer for us.
I would say to find another doctor too!! You do not want to go long without your period especially if you want to have a child. I was brushed off when I was younger as just having a hormone inbalance and put on the pill. Well as it turns out it was more. I have noticed too that some drs really don't try to do anything unless you are TTC. Good Luck finding the right dr!!!!

I agree with the posters who say find another doctor. It doesn't sond like your current doctor has much interest in finding out what is truly worn with you. The sooner you get diagnosed, the sooner you can get the treatment(s) you need. G/L to you & welcome to the board
Definetly see another doctor.I had to go through alot of doctors to find one that actually knew what he was talking about. If you are not having a period on your own you definetly need to be on something to get them regular. good luck!! ((hugs))
[b] thanks to you all for your words... I am such an emotional wreck right now b/c I can't figure out what is wrong with me... and the thing that bothers me the most is in the back of my mind I feel like I won't ever be able to give my husband the child that he wants so bad and my parents their FIRST grandbaby... ALL of my friends are having babies and are pregnant and I am so happy for them but I just wish I could be as happy as them and get pregnant... I am literally driving myself crazy b/c I think I won't ever be able to be a mommy and that's been my dream since I was a little girl

Please find another dr my dr said that it was also out of the question to have PCOS and I struggled and struggled to get pg with my first and then I saw another dr by chance and the first thing she said when I told her about PCOS was lets find out and she did all that she could and got me in the right direction and I was pg in 9mths after struggling terribly on my own. She put me on Metformin and it regulated my hormones and I started my period on my own
Good luck and don't give up

Don't give up yet... you're still young and there are still plenty of options out there. Go to another doctor and get a second opinion. Even if you do have PCOS, that doesn't necessarily mean that you can't have kids. We'll be thinking of you... feel free to post here with any questions that you have. Chances are very good that at least one of us has been through it.

Definately find another doctor who is willing to listen to your concerns and do what they can to help you! Do you have any of the other symptoms of PCOS? Good Luck and let us all know if we can be of any help!
There is another post on here about referring doctors. Let us know what area you are in...maybe someone has a great doctor they can recomend to you!
