My Mood: Points: 2,325.15 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 2,325.15 | could this be true? If you take met for a long period of time that your body gets used to it and then it quits working for you? Or What if you take it for a long time and your body gets used to it and then one day decide that you want off of the met and then you realize that you have to take it forever because met is the only thing that stabilizes your blood sugar? I don't know why, but I am all of a sudden having all of these concerns. |

Also, It IS possible to get off it. Usually, from what I've seen, it requires weight loss (to help increase your bodies response to it's insulin), and following a low sugar/some type of diabetic diet (using common sense). Protein is a great way to help keep sugar levels stable.
My gyn (the person who put me on met) recently told me he felt that I could stop taking met. However, I'm reluctant to stop it, simply because the circulating insulin levels in my bloodstream may rise, which makes it easier to gain weight.
But, it is most def possible to stop taking met and treat sugars in other methods.

| Concerns are good..it means you're not a robot..that you're thinking about your health!
I've been on met 5.5 years and I have not become resistant to met...in fact with my diet and exercise I've been able to cut my dose by 1/3 the last 18 months and it's still holding my hormones. I just had my labs run 2 weeks ago and my male hormones and tryglycerides are the lowest they've ever been. So any worries about becoming resistant can be dismissed. As long as you are exercising, eating to control your sugars and taking your meds consistently, your hormones shouldn't suddenly take any big jumps.
Re: Going off the drug, it depends on the person. Some folks can alter their lifestyle (diet, exercise) enough to manage their insulin and hormones, but it depends on things like genes, diet, how hard their hormones are to move, past history, etc
I have been able to lower my dose of met by 1/3, but thanks to a high prevelence of Type 2 and insulin issues in my family and hormones that are really hard to move, plus the fact that I started having insulin issues when i was a teen and thin, I can't discontinue it, even though I am at my goal weight, run 3 times a week and bike and eat on the IR diet.
It is an individual choice, but studies are showing it safe long-term treatment..you just need to do some trial and error to see what will manage your individual hormones.
Hope this info helps!

My Mood: Points: 2,325.15 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 2,325.15 | That information really helps! thanks so much ! My doctor made it sound as though I would be on met for 5-6 months, just until I got my weight down and then go off of it. I personally don't want to be taken off of it even after I do lose the weight. Plus, although I am feeling a little better lately, I haven't lost any weight so I think it is going to take me longer than just a few months to lose my weight. I am still trying to figure it all out. I am reading about the insulin resistance diet and such. I guess I just have concerns about being taken off of the met before I have even had a chance for it to work for me. I suppose that is just something I will have to discuss with my doctor. I am hoping that I can stay on it for as long as I need to. I am also relieved to hear that it is unlikely to become resistant to met. I would hate to know that we found something that worked for us and had to give it up because the body would become resistant to it. That would be horrible I think. |
