Points: 870.76 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 870.76 | could undereating lead to pcos? just wanted to first of say hello, since i'm recently diagnosed and a new addition to this site
other than the initial shock of the way this disorder may change the rest of my life, i can't help but think i could have done this to myself.
ive always been on the thin side (5'6 122-125 pounds) but due to work stress and actively trying to eat better, im more around 117-120. at the same time i hit this weight, i stopped getting AF. up until that point, AF was like clockwork and never had an issue.
now im thinking that gaining a bit of weight (back up to 122) could bring AF back. any advice on what this could do for my pcos? |

Oddly enough, both times I got pregnant (one ended in a miscarriage) it was right after I gained a little bit of weight back. I was below 110 and lately have weighed 112 about.
You could try it, but there's a good chance you'll still have PCOS. My guess is you're one of lucky ones who gets a period on a regular basis.
Good luck,
Carrie

for some reason, i just can't shake the coincidence of noticing my weight was at an all time low and AF dissappearing for the first time ever. i don't know if its just wishful thinking or not!
going to an endo to discuss my ultrasound next week, afer being recommended to do so by my gyn. we will see what he says... |

I think it'd be interesting to see if you DID get AF once you gain a few pounds back.
For me, weight doesn't seem to matter with bringing AF or not. I've been as high as 120 and as low as 107 and AF didn't come at any of those weights! I sometimes wonder, too, though if my early eating issues did something to bring this all on, since I had AF from 12-about 14 and then became anorexic at 14 and weighed 86-90 pounds and didn't get AF from then on (although I was a comepetitive runner, so they often say competitive athletes lose AF). So I have no idea about that...

What could be happening is that you are depriving your body of proper insulin response. Just as eating too many carbs can alter PCOS, eating too few carbs can do the same. Insulin is very sensative. You said you were eating healthy and lost some weight. Well, what is healthy? It's important to remember that this diet thing isn't one size fits all. So what many thicker or overweight PCOS women need to eat to lose weight may be too low for you. I suggest looking into more what you are eating, how often and bring it to the nutritionalist to see if you need to increase your complex-carb intake. Even a slight alteration can make a huge impact on your health. |

Good luck,
Carrie | Carrie-- so sorry to hear about your mc. Sending you my most healing thoughts
I have been havins some of the same questions about weight and PCOS. While I am by no means underweight, I am thin for my height (6ft 145lbs) and I've been running 35-45 miles a week most of my adult life. I'm wondering if my body fat is low, and the stress of running is high and this interferes with ovulation. Like Carriebabie I also get my AF like clockwork every 35 days. Any ideas about the exercise and ovulation connection? |

mh.. i dont think undereating can cause pcos, but i do think that depending on the person, being to thin can cause infertility...just like anorexic cant have baby, and that you need a bit of body fat to carry a baby.
but when you are thin, undereatin and that you also have pcos....it makes the matter even more complicated. I think that to be pregnant anyway a healthy weight is better...so being underweight is not good just as being overweight is not...you need to get to the weight and to adjust to the lifestyle that fit you the best. |
