Default A couple questions

Hello everyone My name is Kim and my husband and I are going to start the adoption process. I'm very excited. I was wondering if any of you could recomend an adoption agency that you had good experiences with. Should I go with a local agency or there are so many on the internet it kinda hard to know which onw to choose. We will be adopting from the US .

Also for those of you that have already adopted how much did it cost? How long did it take to be placed with a birthmother?

Thanks so much.

i'm not sure if i can be much help, but we are doing a domestic adoption with a small agency in our area. we heard of it through our church- otherwise, i wouldn't have known where to start either

i know that last year when we looked into international- it was going to be 10-16,000, depending on the country. we were looking into colombia, and it was going to be 11.

now that we're doing domestic, it's about 12,000, and then the legal costs.

i have no idea how long it will take- i think that is so different for everyone. but good luck to you as you look for an agency. its very exciting!

Hello- we used Love Basket out of Missouri. A couple at our church adopted through them and had wonderful things to say. We started the process in Aug/06 and were matched in Feb/07. We are picking up our DS on April/20!!!! When the rights are terminated in May it will have been a 9 mo. process!

In the end I think our total cost will be around $17,000 total. I think a good way to think is between $10-$20,000. I know there are some that may be cheaper....I didn't find any. Most situations that I have come across are closer to $20.

There are a few different ways to do it. You can do the whole process with one angency (like we did) or have your homestudy done and then just search for "available situations." You have to do a profile and have a copy of your homestudy. If there is a situation that you are interested in you send a copy of your homestudy and profile to the agency. One lady at our church said "you would be crazy to stay with one agency, get your name out there!" It is totally your decision.

Here are a few places that I have checked for "available situations"

Good luck to you! It is a emotional journey but the result is worth it!! This is a great place to find support!

My husband and I started looking at adoption 5 years ago. We signed up with an agency, done our homestudy and got on the waiting list. They told us that we might wait about a year, year and a half. And it would run us about $12,000 (sliding scale by income). We never heard from them. We never were picked by a birthmother through them.

Fast forward about 4 years, a lady I worked with just one day contacted me and asked if we ever thought about adoption. She knew a guy who knew a young lady looking for a family. We got in contact with him and we now how our son!!

It was a private adoption, we got our homestudy done through Catholic Charities and found an attorney. All in all the cost is less then $10,000.

We worked through the IAC (Independent Adoption Center) www.adoptionhelp.org. They were and are FANTASTIC. They were with us every step of the way, they offer counseling for the birthmother - which was important to us, cause we wanted her to know what she was getting into and have the support through and after the adoption. They are nationwide. We waited 1 year and 4 months from the day we became 'active' aka-homestudy approved till our son was born. He just turned a year old! Anyways, I personally liked working with an agency, they took all the guess work out. It's a difficult process and it's nice to have someone there to lean on and help with everything. They also screen the birthmothers etc. I'm not as familiar w/ private adoptions so I can't compare but going through an agency was the way to go for us. All said, it cost us right at about $20k - we did help pay for some birthmother expenses and she lived on the other side of the country so we had some travel expenses and we had to relinquish 2 birthfathers cause she wasn't sure who was the bf.

Since my desire is to have more children and not necessarily be pregnant to have those children nor does it have to be a baby, we are going thru the state- via a Christian agency- to do home study and 9 or 12 week classes to become licensed foster/adoptive parents in our state...the only cost is $18 for fingerprinting...and that's refundable once we complete the classes.

This agency specializes in placing children age 0-4 in loving homes.

We adopted through a (VERY) large agency in Texas. We were approved by the agency the end of July and our daughter was born October 1. So just a bit over two months. From the beginning of homestudy to finalization was just over a year. We paid just over $20,000, EVERYTHING included.
