Cool At a CROSSROADS !!!

Hello all I am a newbie just diagnosed yesterday even though I think Ive had PCOS for years, at least I think that now that I know what it is, anyway I have a major propblem which may seem weird and/or vain to some and is very different from a majority of the women I have read about with PCOS. I want to control my PCOS and prevent the diabeties and all the other health problems but I don't want to change my apperance (other then losing weight), I have no problem looking like a dude, no I don't want to be a dude I just have looked and acted like one all my life, even before my ovaries worked, and now Im on Yaz (heavy doses - my testosterone was 3x normal)and I haven't seen the endo yet but my gyno is strongly recommending MET which I heard lowers testosterone and prevents the hair gorwth but I don't mind the hair growth, I dont want to lose the side burns and mustache they are a part of me a part of my look. I know my health is more important then anything but appearance is important as well or else why would women be trying to get rid of hair I'm trying to keep. I was just wondering if I'm the only Stud lesbian out there going through this turmoil, I feel like my WHOLE life is about to change not just my eating habits and excersice regiment. Suggestions? Advice?

Well, I don't feel the same way as you, but maybe I can offer a bright spot. When they interviewed the "pregnant man", he hadn't taken testosterone in over 2 years, but still sported a full beard, even while obviously pregnant, and subject to increased hormones. So unless you are using some method of hair removal, I don't think you will lose what is already there.

I would never say that looks don't matter, at least a little. We all have some standard we want to live up to. Yours is just different than mine. I hope you are able to achieve good health without changing parts of you that you like or accept.

Thanks Stellrnix, I think the initial shock of my whole apperance changing and realizing that it was because of the PCOS that I look the way I do kinda took me for a loop but I have come to grips now and realize my health is whats most important and my partner will still love me with the hair or not.

I think some women on here have had a decrease in hair growth when using met (?) but I think most of the time it doesn't 'help' with facial hair. You might want to check around the metphormin topics!

once the hair is there, you have to use something like Spiro, electrolosis or laser to get rid of it. it doesn't go away on it's own even with Met.

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, but with the lurking and reading I've been doing, I have a what is probably a stupid question:

I was diagnosed with high cholesterol, high sugar (diabetes type 2) and treated with Lipitor and Metformin by my GP. After being on these pills for 2 or 3 years, I was finally diagnosed with PCOS. As the treatment for that, my gyno put me on bc pills.

Now I'm reading that some of you were given Metformin for PCOS??? I'm totally confused. I was under the impression that it was a diabetic treatment. Was I mislead, or just plain stupid?

On a side note, relating to hair, I've noticed that my body (leg, arm, chin) hair has decreased over the past couple years. I thought it was just a getting older fact of life (I'm 44). Now I read, it may or may not be linked to Metformin?

I'm blown away. I don't know what to think??

Phoenix420,
First, good for you for being comfortable with who you are and how you look. So many of us really suffer because of this. I'm happy to hear that someone sees this as a trait that is a strength rather than a liability.

To be able to deal with PCOS with the fewest external trait repercussions could be done, I'm certain. What you really want to do is control insulin, so you might try to alternative route. There are quite a few women on cinnamon and vinegar. I don't recall any of them talking about outcomes other than the desired one: reduced insulin levels. Try the Vinegar for IR , Weight Loss, and Hunger (Highlights, FAQ's, & Popular Threads) and ARTICLE: Cinnamon Promotes Healthy Blood Sugar (doses mentioned) threads. They might help you start making some decisions.

What's should be most important in your decision is your health. Please remember that PCOS can encourage the development of high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes II, just to name a few. If you decide to go the alternative route, you might consider working with a naturopath who can help you make good decisions that will least impact your physical appearance.

Finally, good luck! Try frequenting the Alternative Remedies thread to learn more http://www.soulcysters.net/search.php?searchid=1831690. The women there are very well informed and can offer info that you might not find otherwise.

Hi Phoenix. I was amazed to find this post today. I landed on this site while trying to research issues my partner has had since childhood. MANY symptoms of either PCOS or non-classical adrenal hyperplasia. Including...obesity, abnormal hair grow some places but thinning of hair on head, depression, anxiety, high testosterone, and an ablation four years ago for fibroids/excessive bleeding, insomnia, and some sort of seizure one time. The high testosterone wasn't known until last year when she decided to undergo treatment for gender identity disorder. Now she has transitioned to "HE" by taking testosterone injections. Now that the levels are normal male the anxiety and depression have decreased. He is more comfortable living as male than as a masculine lesbian. He also had a mastectomy 4 weeks ago. We see the gyno this week to see about a hysterectomy due to cramping and some spotting ( I am worried about cancer). Now I am wondering if all this was a result of a medical problem with hormones rather than a gender ID issue. I am so angry that no doctor really tried to see this whole picture a long time ago. He did drop from 280 to 240 pounds after starting testosterone but is still overweight. Now I am wondering if he needs treatment for PCOS to control the insulin issues. I am very confused and hope the doctor is willing to listen and figure something out. Long story short, if you want live as a guy there is always that option too. Whatever makes you happy
