Unhappy crying and spotting...

I was diagnosed with PCOS 3 months ago. I am from the USA, but am currently living overseas for a few years with my husband's job. The DR. here put me on Diane 35. I have been getting depressed and when I have a crying spell, I am spotting. This is happening most of the month every month. I have had a history with post-partum depression before. Has anyone had an experience similar to this or have some advice?
Thanks!

hi hmmioki,

I was on Diane-35 for 3 months before too. I used to be more irritated than depressed while I was on Diane-35. I used to be irritated at small small things and snap at ppl for no apparent reason. Spotting was also there but very little and just once or twice a month. I used to have bad headaches and my breasts hurt (specially the left one), they call it 'breast tenderness' but trust me there was nothing 'tender' abt it!

If your depression is getting worse, I think you should tell your doctor abt it.. he may change your medication... I'm on Yasmin now and I think it's better for me comparitively, I don't have headaches anymore. Good Luck.

hi heather sorry to hear that you're feeling blue :-( i'm on week 6 of dianette which is the UK/Irish version and you're definately not alone with the crying and moodiness. after a weekend of anger/irritation and crying spells, i have come to the realisation that i have lost ALL controll over my moods. hormones are really scary. i'm not spotting at the moment, but i don't remember what happened last month--that's an interesting connection.

does your DR know that you've had postnatal depression? if i were you i'd check in with him/her just to be sure that the pill won't have a longer lasting effect, etc...

i would really love to hear any remedies or advice for dealing with these mood swings! i'm actually considering going off the pill for the sake of my marriage!!! my DH has been spectacular, but he's also getting rather weary after living with the anti-christ for 6 weeks!

Well, I went off the Diane-35, and I felt a little bit better everyday. Now I feel normal again. I am currently looking into alternative ways to treat PCOS. I am new at this, but I am reading about women who take Glucophage and Spino and that is all they need. Or some use an IUD and don't need bcp. And, I've also heard Yasmine is a good alternative. I am currently still looking for a DR. who will treat me. My Gyno, referred me to an Endo out here. The Endo wont put me on Glucophage until we do more tests...
Good luck to the both of you.

If you're having these kinds of problems, please go back to your doctor and ask for (demand) a new pill. All BCPs are not the same. I have been on four pills, one of which made me seriously fear for my health.

The first pill (Zovia)-- lots of breakthrough bleeding. The second pill, (Lo-ovral) no breakthrough bleeding, but I felt like I was living my life underwater -- I felt disconnected, as well as experiencing dryness, cramps, breast tendernest and always being a bit lethargic. The next pill was Ovcon-35. I had some breakthrough bleeding, but it's the only pill I've ever been on where I feel like myself. My libido is strong, no dryness etc. I love it, except for the breakthrough bleeding -- I now have two light periods a month. So after being fed up with the breakthrough bleeding, I said I'd try one more, and went on Yasmin. For me, that pill was evil incarnate. Extreme lethargy. Aches and pains. Leg cramps each night. Hot flashes and nausea after taking it. Headaches after taking it, which combined with the heat flashes made me suspect my blood pressure was spiking up. Crying jags. Heavy breakthrough bleeding. Dryness. No libido. After one month of that I feared for my health. About six days into the neutral pills, I started to feel like myself again. I'm back on Ovcon-35, and really couldn't be happier. I'd like to stick to one period a month, but hopefully that will even out over time, and the number of days on the two light ones are still fewer than some of the heavy ones I can get when I'm on nothing. My concern is that I've been on BAD pills, and I'm afraid to try something that could be even worse. Now that's my experience -- if you read these boards, you'll find that everyone has different reactions -- some people can't say enough nice things about Yasmin.

You're lucky in that you are able to recognize that your medication may be making you nuts. Listen to yourself and go try something else. There are hundreds of pills out there -- if one is making you depressed or ill, keep going until you find one that works, or for another treatment method. If you're looking for ways to treat PCOS, BCPs may not be the answer for you. For me, a strict low-carb diet did the trick. After six or seven months, I lost 70 pounds (now down 100), and after about five months on BCPs to jumpstart my non-existent periods, I went off the pill and I was regular like clockwork. My blood levels went from abnormal in many areas to the picture of health.

For me, diet control did the trick, with the exception of the excess hair (it did help with my thinning hair, though). So understand why you want to be on BCPs -- if it's for birth control, there are reasons for that. But BCPs are not the only way to "treat" PCOS.

Good luck to you.

thanks everyone for your kind advice. I stopped taking these pills, and over a week, every day was better than the last one. I am feeling normal again, exercising again, etc. In the meantime, I am going home today to visit family. I am going to see a DR. who studies PCOS for alternative treatments, as that was the sole reason for going on the pill. I tried to talk to 2 different DR's here, but have been unsuccessful in getting the kind of help I need or want.

hi there heather!

i'm glad you're feeling better! I just wanted to let you all know that if you decide to go back onto Diannette/Diane 35, or are considering starting it, that there IS some hope. I had 2 months of hell---extremely sore breasts, bad cramps the whole month, crying spells, MAJOR hormonal highs and lows... but now I'm 6 days into month three and (knock on wood) everything has been just fine. My breasts aren't even sore and I actually feel like a normal person at the moment. I really hope I'm not jinxing myself, but I'm hoping that my body has adjusted....

Just in case this helps others....
