I am a cyster. Got diagnosed in 2001. Started taking Glucophage for my insulin resistance, got terribly ill, was hospitalized several times, and finally Vanderbilt diagnosed me as having lactic acidosis.
I was told at the annual PCOS conference (in Atlanta back in 03 I believe) that if I ever developed Lactic Acidosis from taking Glucophage (Metformin), then I could never take it again. In essence, I am allergic to it.
They spoke of a "new drug"...basically a miracle drug for women with PCOS that had ben "shelved" due to the lack of demand. The drug companies are in it to make money and they are going to turn out the meds that are in highest demand.
My sister (who also has insulin resistance but no PCOS) was recently given a med called Vietta. She too had had bad reactions to glucophage. So this med called Vietta is injected thru needle into your belly twice a day (at least for her).
HAVE ANY OF YOU TAKEN VIETTA? DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT???
CURRENTLY, I AM ON ABSOLUTELY NO DIABETES/PCOS MEDS AND I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF ANY OF YOU KNOW OF NEW MEDS TO CONTROL SUGAR, TESTOSTERONE LEVELS, ETC. I WOULD BE SOOO GRATEFUL.
p.s. The only "PCOS med" I have ever been given are Glucophage and B-control pills. Surely to goodness there is something else out there??? I REALLY need some advice as the doctor's in my rural area are ignorant about PCOS and my health is declining.
I think you are probably talking about Byetta. It is injected through a small needle. I am unable to take Glucophage due to gastro side effects and I had the same side effects from Byetta. However, my mother is able to take Byetta with no problems, so not everyone has the same side effects.

What were your symptoms of Lactic Acidosis? I think I may have it. Mostly after exercise I get really sick feeling, like I have the flu. It hurts to breathe deeply, I pee a lot and usually get cold. I am achy all over. It seems to coincide with the point that I got really consistent with taking my MET.
I have had blood tests, stress tests, CT scans....basically my reg dr thinks I am 'healthy' I am thinking I need to go to my gyno since she prescribes the Met.
