Question Curious if..

It seems alot of the board here has had PCOS for years and years and since they were young. I was diagnosed a year and a half ago but believe I had some symptoms after my first child. Is there anyone here who began having Symptoms after they had children??

We had a poll on this topic once and a whole lot of us here had our symptoms appear or worsen after having a child.

I had never heard of PCOS until about 8 months ago! And I had only a couple of symptoms before having my daughter. A year ago - all heck broke loose!

Well, no, because I haven't had children. Other people will have to field this one. I think with some people it make take a while for symptoms to manifest themselves. When I first started my cycle everything was fine. I think I started noticing changes my sophomore year of high school. So that was over two years after I had started menstruating. I think most people find out they have it when they try to have children because of how difficult it is to get pregnant.

I wasn't diagnosed till last year, and that was only because we were TTC.

I want to say I never had a lot of problems until my first pregnancy, and after I had my first child, PCOS reared into full gear.

It cleared my brain fog, brought back af, helped me lose weight, made me o' again, and helped me get pregnant. My first Metformin miracle is now 3 years old, my second (surprise one) arrived December11!

ok, i'll try to make this short lol... before i got pregnant with our 1st child, i had only the 'no period' symptom(well that's the only one i noticed)... while trying for our second, we found out i had like 25 annovulatory cycles in a row, along with no periods... now after our 3rd child(3rd live birth, but 7th pregnancy) i have EXTREME weight gain(i lost 30lbs while pg, and now i have gained it ALL back in 3 months)... no period, no ovulation, hirituism(sp)... there are also some new things that i am finding could be linked... like my EXTREME amount of snoring, and my tuberous breasts...

but still no DX yet... but i am going to post about that soon lol

The only symptom I had since my teen years was excess hair. Ive never had a problem with irregular periods and I believe the IR is new too. I had twins 5 years ago then another baby 2 years later . I believe its after my first pregnancy that my body began to change. It may well have been the extra 5kg I was carrying as I was definately heavier too, but the excess hair got worse, my skin was extremely oily, hair began to thin and my stomach got so big I looked like I was 6 months pregnant . I do wonder though, how pregnancy can trigger it ?

I have noticed in my body, that when I don't take care of myself diet wise, the insulin resistance makes me gain so fast, and so much of it goes right to my belly! But my symptoms probably started when I was 10. I was the only little girl in the 5th grade whose face was covered with horrible acne. When I was 15 I was able to add Hirsutism to the list, not so long after I began having irregular periods. When I was 23 I gained about 20lbs and all my symtoms got a lot worse, and I began having problems with irritability, mood swings. I got pregnant about 6 months later, and after the morning sickness wore off I really started putting on the lbs. So here I was, big and fat and pregnant, but able to gow a full beard. I think it was the awful weight gain during my pregnancy that blew it all out of proportion. I couldn't lose any of the weight, I even gained after my son was born, instead of losing.I had no energy at all whatso ever, and was so depressed because I felt like an ogar, seriously!. I took Lexapro, which helped enough to get me moving around more, and getting a very physcial, strenuous job helped me lose some of the weight. but I vow, I will not go off my BCP ever, and I will not have any more kids, once I get control of this altogether I am not willing to let go, it's my health, I need it.

Whats turned it all around for me is getting some serious exercise in most weekdays now. Oh, and to make myself feel human again I had that huge stomach of mine surgically removed with a tummy tuck !! The insulin resistence that reared its ugly head after I had my kids stuffed my body shape up so much I felt so depressed. No amount of exercising seemed to make an iota of difference to that stomach of mine. Im pleased to say that now at least I can work towards that goal of bettering what I have now , instead of it feeling just so useless.

PCOS seems to be a progressive thing. I was diagnosed early only because of testing after I had acute pancreatitis, which is rare in young people. I had some symptoms, mostly my irregular periods, trouble maintaining my weight, and acne, which up until that moment were chalked up to adolecent hormones, etc. After I lost my first babies my periods just stopped. It was still many years before the more heinous symptoms would arise. I got most of the really awful stuff during the time I was TTC, like facial hair, thinning hair on my head, really bad weight issues (though this had been a battle beforehand), worse acne, skin tags, diabetes, etc. The weird thing is that after my successful pregnancy with Jamie my period decided to return. It has not been perfectly regular, but it's here and it's not the nightmare long periods I had prior to my first pregnancy. I can't explain why this has happened. I hope it means that I'll be able to have another child without fertility meds. We'll just have to see when the time comes.

Any shift in hormones can make PCOS rear it's ugly head. For some people, it's just puberty. And for some it it's birth control and for others, it's pregnancy. BTW, all pregnancy can make PCOS get better for some women, too!

I had a couple of symptoms, mostly excess stomach weight, during my teen years. Then I went on Depo Provera during college and things got much worse. Now here I am after my first child and things are even more worse! Yikes, I'm scared to have another. . .if I will even be able to have another.

So yeah, unfortunately, that's the way it is for some of us

We tried for 10 years to have our Rugrat. I diagnosed myself about 1996/7, my dr thought I was a fruitcake. I had the hairgrowth, hard to loose weight, no/few periods, and of course trouble getting pregnant. So, no diagnosis. I should also mention that when I went on the pill I gained 100 lbs consistently over three years, when I went off, I stopped. I totally blame the pill.

While I was pregnant, it was great, I was warm for the first time in my life, I LOST 30 lbs while eating more than I do now (that says alot) and while BFing I had regular AF's. Then they tapered off to nothing. So, into the Dr I went wth thoughts that I might be pregnant. As it turned out, I had a competant Dr this time. Dx within two weeks. I don't think the symptoms are worse than before.

I didn't have any signs until I went off BCP's around age 18. I was only on them around a yr. before I went off of them. I had my DD at 20 & had some trouble getting pregnant w/ her. I had more signs as I got older when I came off BCP's at age 25. I was dx at age 27.
