I've lurked here and used to post under a different log-in name a few years ago but can't remember the username I used.
Has anyone ever gotten regular cycles on metformin, then had them get irregular again?
I took 2000 mg of met for a while and got regular 30-day periods. I was too sick on 2000 mg and decreased to 1000 mg and my cycles were a little more irregular again, but I always got my period within 32-35 days. Last cycle was 39 days but I was under a lot of stress, so I attributed it to that. So I increased my dose to 1500 mg this cycle and it's day 43 and still no period.
What is going on? Has this ever happened to anyone else? It almost feels like the met has stopped working. I'm really freaked out though because my mom went through menopause in her mid-30s, and I'm 32 so I'm afraid this is a sign of perimenopause. If I know that other people have had their cycles get really screwy all of a sudden while taking met when the met kept their cycles regular before, maybe I could relax a little!
There are several factors that can contribute to irregular cycles...sleep, stress, diet, exercise, dose etc. For me, I found that my diet kept my cycles irregular on met for over a year. My cycles started out ok, but then ended up going 66+ days and I couldn't understand it.
Then I did some reading and found that if you don't regulate your insulin through diet on the medication, you can actually counteract it. I started eating to control my insulin and my periods have been 28-32 days like clockwork. I'll never second-guess what I eat again.
So do what you can diet and lifestyle-wise, and if they continue to be bungled, I'd have your Dr run some labs and see where things are at hormonally.
Good luck!

Thanks for replying, Christy.
Am I understanding correctly that your cycles were normal on met, then stopped being so? That's the part that's confusing me, that the met worked for me to have regular cycles for so long, then has apparently stopped working. I do exercise and watch my diet (though not as perfectly as I should), but I have a lot of stress.
Are there any resources on this website for how PCOS affects menopause?

They were normal for a couple of months, but after that intial first couple of cycles, I was back bungled. AF came, but very irregularly until the diet was straightened out. I suspect in your case, that stress is the culprit...you mention it a lot and I would do what you can to help that and talk to your Dr about running some bloodwork to make sure everything is ok hormonally.
Hope it helps!

I've been on 1000mg met/day since Nov. My cycles started out very regular but last month I was a week late and now I'm 11 days late and counting. So, I'm experiencing the same thing but my dose, stress level and eating habits haven't changed at all. I don't know what my body is up to . Maybe I need to talk to my dr. about increasing my dose.
