Default False Positive PG Test

I have a few questions for everyone. I was diagnosed with PCOS in my late teens and I have have been on the BCP for years even prior to being diagnosed. So my cysts I guess were gone because of the BCP. I quite taking the pill about two years ago and my husband and I have been TTC #1 for about 10 months now. I am not taking anything right now to help us conceive. I figured we would try on our own for a little bit.

Last weekend we had sex and a few hours later I started cramping which is weird for me since I just got over my period about 11 days prior and my cycles are 50 days apart. For the heck of it I decided to test on Tuesday and I had a really faint positive test. So I tested again the next morning and it was negative but then I tested again after work (around 6 pm) and it was a darker but still light +. I test again the next morning and it was negative so I took another one that night and what do you know +.
I decided to go to the doctor on Friday and he did a urine test which came back negative. He said that it could be cysts but he took blood for another preg. test and also to check my hormones. Then I have to go for an ultrasound on Wednesday.
I have been getting pains in my hips and cramps on and off throughout the day and sometimes aches in my thighs.
I guess my question is has anyone else gone through this before and what was the outcome? What type of cysts give off HCG or is it all types? Could I still be PG? I know this is long but I don't know where else to turn besides for just waiting until I go back to the doctor. I am just so confused and anxious at the same time. Thank you all!

I have never heard of cysts giving off HCG...the only time I've ever heard of anyone having detectable amounts of HCG in their system is either when they are pregnant, or have certain kinds of extremely rare cancer.
Chances are, you are pregnant. When do you get your HCG blood test results back?
And another thing, doctor office urine strips are typically way less sensitive than most of the HPT's. With both of my pregnancies, the dr. office tests were negative after I'd already gotten a positive at home. Good luck!

I agree with the previous poster. Hcg is commonly only found in pregnancy and certain cancers. I have never heard of cysts giving off Hcg, but I guess that's why doctor's know more than I do. I hope that it is your BFP! Let us know what the doctor says. Baby dust.

I too have never heard of cysts giving of hcg. When will you find out what the b/w was? Also, if you're too early you won't see anything on u/s.

I was supposed to get my results back today but since I also got my hormone levels checked they said tomorrow. I have found online others saying that cysts can but I can't find out which cysts do and what treatment they give them. Today I have had some lower back pain, also my shoulder is hurting and a achy kind of isolated pain just left of my belly button. Who knows what all that means...Anyways thank you all for your comments and best of luck to you all

I'm curious to hear about your b/w. I have not heard about HCG production by cysts either. I have heard about possible false positives when you are perimenopausal so other than PG and rare cancer, that is something to keep in mind if you are at that age (read that somewhere, maybe on peeonastick.com, but I can't remember for sure). Of the options though, PG sounds most likely. KUP and GL!

I just noticed that you said you just got over your period 11 days ago. How long did it last? If your on CD16 or more, (meaning that your period lasted 5 days and now your 11 days post AF) it's even more likely that you're PG. It may just be very soon after implantation so testing is giving confusing results right now. Don't give up hope and let us know what you find out

Izzy,

This is really interesting to me. I agree with what everyone else has posted, which is that I've never heard of cysts giving off HCG but I'm not sure what the answer is.

I hope you get your BFP.

I had a regular period but it only lasted like three days, which is a little unusual. I hope your all right and I am pg. It says on the pg test directions that cysts can give you a false positive. I am keeping my fingers crossed and I will let you know. My blood work will come back tomorrow and then I have the u/s on Wednesday.

Well the blood work came back "normal", so what the heck does that mean. I know that the three tests I took (all different brands) came back with a faint positive, however I did have a few negative one too. I am lost...with this whole thing. I have the u/s tomorrow.

Did they explain to you what that meant? Normal could mean different things depending on what they're testing. Usually IF testing (or pg testing) doesn't have a result of "normal". There's either some number or a +/-.

I agree with Traci...did they say you were pregnant or not?
Were they testing for pregnancy, or just to see if you had an elevated HCG? Which would be pretty much the same.

I'm sorry that you are going through this. The results of your tests are confusing and I'm sure that you don't know what to think at this point.
I had a quantitative HCG test done last spring when I thought I might be PG and when I called to get the results, they said my test was "normal" when I asked what that meant, they said, normal means not pregnant. I would guess this is the same for you, but I would ask for the specific tests and results when you go in tomorrow. Quantitative testing is very sensitive so if you don't have elevated levels on there, you likely aren't PG.
I'm not sure why you would have false + when you POAS though. Did you read the test within the time specified? If you wait too long, some tests can turn positive but actually be negative. I've also heard of certain brands of tests leaving evap lines which can be very misleading. I hope that you get some more information when you go in tomorrow.
On a positive note, it sounds like they tested other hormones which came back normal. Most cysters have abnormal testosterone and DHEAS so it's good news if those levels were normal.

They tested to see if I was pg or not and my hormone levels. I have taken many pg tests before and I have never had positive or even faint positive tests before, let alone three in one week. I am still getting cramping and back pain. I went for my u/s today and the ultra. tech said well, "You have nice ovaries, sometimes I can't even see them". Whatever that means? I won't have the results from that back until next week. I am very confused but I guess only time will tell.

I did check the results within the time frame and they were all different brands. I did get some negatives too. I of course waited in the bathroom the whole time for the results.

I really feel for you! I think you should call your doctor and ask that he/she explain the test results. A lot of doctors think we know everything and are so used to doing all these tests that they don't explain things properly!!!

I wish you best of luck and plenty of baby dust!
