I have had a 3.3cm cyst (among others) on my right ovary for years now. I know many women get them, their dr. watches them, and they get it removed if necessary. Mine has neither grown nor shrunk in all this time. For some reason, my ob/gyn keeps telling me to come in for sonos and that we'll "keep an eye on it". Now, isn't 3 years a long time to keep doing this??!!!
Does anyone know if having this stupid cyst there for so long can/does effect my hormones? Because even on Spiro 100mg I have insane hirsuitism issues. I take Met on and off, as it bloats me and causes weight gain. I am an avid exerciser, certified in personal training, and live an extremely healthy lifestyle, yet the 10 lbs. I've gained over the last couple of years WILL NOT BUDGE, except to get WORSE during the cold months. I've had my thyroid checked several times.
Can that cyst be making my pcos symptoms even worse?!
Any info is sooooo appreciated! TIA!

Hi Susan,
I don't know for sure, but I agree, 3 years sounds like a long time to have a cyst stay there and stay the same size. Have you tried any BCP? I've heard that helps them shrink. Although if it's been there that long??? Sorry I don't have any answers but I wanted you to know that I'm thinking about you! I hope you get some answers soon!

First off, I should say I don't actually have PCOS, so your situation is most likely different than mine.
But the interesting thing is, I THOUGHT I had PCOS because a lot of the symptoms seemed to describe me. (But not all the symptoms, for instance, I had regular periods and no insulin resistance) Anyway, the excess hair was getting to me and I asked my ob/gyn to check into the possibility of PCOS. She did, and found not PCOS, but a single cyst. It was larger than yours (5 X 8 cms) and had to be removed surgically. And she only discovered the cyst because I asked about the facial hair. My free testosterone was very high and she said that it was possible the cyst (a benign serous cystadenoma--this is a totally different type of cyst than the little ones in PCOS) had been secreting testosterone. So, in my experience of one big cyst and no PCOS, it seems like a possibility that the cyst could be raising your testosterone and therefore worsening the excess hair.
It's hard to say whether removing it helped with the hair, since I also started hormonal birth control to prevent future cysts. The hair definitely improved with the hormonal BC, and didn't worsen when I took a break for a few months before changing brands. There's still excess hair, but it isn't as dark and grows in slower so it's much harder to see and easier to control. I don't feel uncomfortable about it anymore, which is what matters most.
Our situations may be too different to be useful, but isn't 3cm large for a PCOS cyst? You may have this other kind of cyst as well as PCOS. As far as I know, it's okay to watch these cysts for a while, but I don't know how long.
By the way, I was reading here because I'm still searching for the perfect birth control method. And I like to see all the weight loss success stories! Anyway, I hope this may be helpful information.
