Default d & c

I just micarried tuesday and I went to the doc yesterday he said I need a d&c which is schduled for tommorrow. I never had any thing like this never even had a surgery. I am really really scared. This is my 2nd miscarriage. I miscarried identical twins this time. THe fist miscarriage I didn't get a d&c. I feel this time my hematoligist is pushing it. Do you bleed more after a d&c? How long does the bleeding last? I am bleeding now and it is like a light period with blood clots is that normal? if I don't get my d&c how long will the bleeding last? I know everyone is different I just was wondering what everyone did?

Thanks

Hello,

Sorry for your loss.

After my D&C, I bleed/spotted for about a week, almost exactly like a period. Use pads and liners only - no tampons! The day I got home, it stung when I would urinate, but the next day that sensation had gone away and I felt well enough to go to the mall for a few hours.

Let me know if you have any other questions; I'll help with anything else you need. Good luck.

Hi Cregger,

I'm so sorry for your loss I just said goodbye to the October moms thread too.

I had my D&C yesterday (I was 9 weeks). I was not bleeding at all prior to it. I think everyone recovers differently after the procedure. As for me, I had some cramping when I woke up from the anesthesia, and they have me plenty of pain meds so I didnt feel a thing after that. I had heavy bleeding the first time I went to the bathroom after the D&C, then it tapered off quite a bit as time went on. This morning I have some brownish bleeding, but its not heavy. Pain wise, its not bad at all. Just some soreness where my uterus is, but not enough to keep me from doing normal things. I got a prescription for pain killers if I need them. I used them yesterday just because I wasnt in the mood to feel anything after what I'd been through. My doc told me to not exercise for a week to help keep the bleeding down, and to be on pelvic rest for 2 weeks (no sex no tampons).

My doctor recommeded the D&C because she said it would be more painful to have the miscarriage naturally, and with a lot more bleeding (enough that I could end up in the emergency room). IMO, the D&C gets it over with quickly and relatively safely (there are risks which your doc will explain to you). I was told that the bleeding/spotting after the procedure could last a few days to a couple of weeks. I dont know about a natural miscarriage though.

Ultimately, its your choice which way you go. Since I wasnt bleeding before, D&C made the most sense for me. If you do have the D&C, dont be scared, it was no where near as bad as I expected.

I'm so sorry your twins are gone as well as your first little one! ((Hugs))

I haven't had a d&c... I had a natural m/c at 5 weeks last year, and it was like a long strange period for me. I think I bled somewhat lightly for over two weeks, but everyone is very different. I'm not much of a cramper, so the pain wasn't an issue for me that it can be for some women. It's your decision, and I would just decide based on the "get it over with" choice vs. waiting to see how it goes. Whichever sounds most appropriate for you emotionally seems like the way to go. Sometimes like this, it's hard to even think, so maybe get your husband's opinion and take that into consideration.
Best wishes,
Sheri

First off, I'm so sorry for your losses!!

I had a D&C on 2/18 and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I was roughly 8 weeks along and we did a D&C so we could do a tissue analysis since this was my 2nd loss.

The procedure itself was very quick. I woke up with slight cramping- on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the most painful), these were no more then a 3. I was given 800 mg of Motrin and all was well. My ob/gyn also gave me medicine that I had to take every 4 hours for a 24 hour time frame to stop the bleeding. So I bled the day of the D&C, then a little for 2 days afterwards and that was it. I found if I pushed myself too hard for the next week, I would spot, but that was it. A good friend of mine had to have a D&C with her twins and I know she did bleed more then I did- so that may be the case for you as well.

Best of luck to you!
-Heather

My loss was 2nd trimester, so I don't have any answers for you. But I'm sorry about your little ones - I know how much you miss them.

I had a second tri loss, so this may not apply. I had more of an exploratory D&C yesterday because I haven't had a period since my son was born. The D&C itself was a piece of cake. I had some fibroids that the doc took out. I was a little crampy in the recovery room, but now I have no cramps whatsoever. I also stopped bleeding.

The hardest part for me was getting the IV in! I'm also having some side-effects from the anesthesia, but that is not normal at all.

The thing that helped me the most was having my mom and DH there with me. I was also at a great hospital where they let me be with my mom and DH at all times when I was awake. I really think that the emotional part of it is the hardest of all.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and you are in my thoughts!

I'm so sorry you lost your babies

I mc'd quads & had to have a D&C. I've m/c'd naturally twice, D&C once, & methotrexate shot once. I prefer the D&C. I know that it sounds horrible but the waiting to m/c'y just about killed me. I knew that I was m/c'y'ing but I was waiting to...it was just emotionally horrible. I was an emotional wreck before/during/after the D&C but at least after the D&C I knew that I wasn't carrying around my babies that didn't survive anymore. I had to have a D&C w/ the quads b/c I was pg w/ quads & my dr said the trauma to my body by waiting to m/c'y naturally would have been too much. I had never had surgery before either (except if you could being knocked out when I got my wisdom teeth out when I was 16). When I woke up from it I had a major asthma attack. I bled for quite a while (months) but it was b/c I was pg w/ quads. I know that when I m/c'd naturally, I bled for weeks on end w/ no end in sight. I would not want to go through that again.

I was out completly for mine. I was told that I was bleeding too much to try and MC on my own. They checked me in, did the procedure and 6 hrs later I was out. WORD TO THE WISE: No matter how healthy your blood sugar is, watch it after losing that much blood. I about passed out after thinking I was okay to walk around after that. I had to drink OJ or I woulda been back in hospital. As for the bleeding, I only spotted very minor after mine, Much less than a period. HTH.

The procedure was done at 8:00 last night. All is wll this morn and no pain at all I have very light spotting. I really don't have to wear a pad. I am going to though just in case it desides to get stronger. I lost my babys a 8 weeks. that was my 2nd miscarraige. first d & c.
