Question Daily Glucose Intake?

Okay, so I...like most of us, have been diagnosed with IR (not DTII yet).

I didn't take it too seriously until my mother found out and flipped over (she's a nurse), just about breaking down in tears. I guess it's important to be serious about diabetes.

So, my first goal is to watch my 'sugar' intake. I went shopping for the first time yesterday and checked out all the Nutrition Facts on all the packaging to get as little 'sugar' in everything I bough. I did pretty good.

I just don't know what I should be comparing all of this to.

Does anyone know off-hand what a good sugar gram per day goal would be?

Is it correct that sugar is a carbohydrate so, in general, if I just watched my carbo intake, I would be set? If so, what is a good carbo goal?

I don't want to get carried away here, I want to keep it real simple so I don't get overwhelmed. Checking all labels for grams of sugar has been perfect for keeping it simple.

Carb intake is a major consideration when u are diabetic as well as IR....BUT refined sugar intake is also.

The guidlines for appropriate carb intake are pretty vague. I think the less u get the better.....but it sort of depends on ur carb intake before. If u were eating 300gms of carbs a day, and u cut it to 150, that is a big improvement. However if u are not a big carb junkie then going as low as 20, 30 40, 50 grams a day is realistic. You just sort of need to experiment with ur own diet, how u feel, how ur insulin levels are doing etc.

THe best (and simplest way) way to deal with IR is to eliminate refined sugar and white flour from ur diet then sort of go from there. If u are cutting ur carb grams to 50 a day, but u still load up with ice tea sweetened with sugar all day, then ur defeating the purpose.

Best of luck

I find that some of the things that the dieticians said was ok for me to eat re amount of sugar in it, was still too much for me. The low sugar or no sugar added Alpen (muesli) which they told people to eat instead of the normal Alpen, i couldnt take, it sent my sugars up and sent me to sleep.... but i think i am quite sensitive to sugars... i tried the tiniest bit of honey on my toast one day and slept for about an hour... whereas some people i know with diabetes can eat things that i cant and it hardly raises their blood sugars.... my partner is diabetic (diet controlled) we had exactly the same to eat and when i checked our sugars after 2 hours mine had gone up to 13.8 (248.4) and hers was 8.4 (151.2) which is fine for after a meal.... today mine has been up to 15.2 (273.6).... but i think my meds need looking at again, as my diabetes seems to change anywhere from 6 months to just over a year....
