Thumbs down Daily Nausea and/or Vomiting

I know, I know - disgusting, right!?! But, for many years now I have dealt with daily or nearly daily nausea and/or vomiting first thing in the morning. It baffled doctors - no one could figure out why.

Firstly, I'm not pg. This has been confirmed over and over and over again...I am anovulatory, so yeah...not going to happen. But, it's LIKE I'm pg. Morning sickness only - and never or rarely any other time of day.

One suggestion was a stomach problem - but we've not been able to find anything.

The most recent suggestion is that it's a symptom of elevated prolactin (I am moderately elevated) - anyone have this experience? Anyone have elevated prolactin?

This is a bad situation, and I am worried about ruining my teeth. I also detest nausea/vomiting - it's like the worst sensation in the world for me.

Any insight is appreciated!

Thanks,
K

How are your sinuses? I know for me personally, if I'm feeling really nauseous 9 times out of 10 it's a sinus issue. I know it is if I pinch the top of my nose and the nausea goes away. It usually happens to me if my hormones are doing really wonky things (ie, like when I was on depo I was throwing up everyday) or if I eat a lot of nuts.

That's interesting - I never thought of sinuses. I think mine are ok, though. I've never really had sinus issues and when I pinch the top of my nose, I don't feel any pressure or anything.

The one thing I have noticed that makes it worse is if I get up too early in the morning - on days I can sleep in (like until 8 or 9am), I rarely vomit and sometimes do not even have nausea. But, if I get up early (and, especially if I am lacking sleep), it's inevitable that I'm going to throw up...

Have they done an endoscopy on you? An ulcer could cause the problem. Especially first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

They have not done an endoscopy. Part of that could be the inconsistent insurance (switching from doc to doc, with all my health problems, this one sort of falls by the wayside, particularly when I have more critical issues at the forefront). I was told by one of my last docs (a GP) that he did not think I had an ulcer or that it was stomach-related. He gave me an acid treatment (I don't remember the name off-hand, but it's like Prevacid) to take daily and that did nothing for the nausea. Anti-nausea medications help, but they are not good to take over the long term, apparently, and can cause more problems than they solve.

I don't have a hard time believing it's the prolactin, really. In my reading, I have read how some women actually will get nauseated after intercourse because of temporarily elevated prolactin levels. Prolactin levels do fluctuate to some extent throughout the day, oftentimes being more elevated first thing in the morning (prolactin is, afterall, one of the key pregnancy hormones).

So, if it's the prolactin...ok. I guess my biggest question is: how common is it for ladies with PCOS to have elevated prolactin and, if they have it, how common is it to have the nausea/vomiting? Any successful treatments? I'd love to have something to ask about when I get insurance again and get to see a doc again.

Thanks, everyone for all your ideas.

Cheers,
K

It sucks, doesn't it? I don't vomit every morning, but I am nauseated virtually every morning. Like, this morning, I was sick to my stomach and had dry heaves, but didn't vomit (which was good). Usually, there's nothing in my tummy to vomit anyway except a bit of acid or some water (sorry for the disgusting details!), but I still worry about my teeth. I have really soft enamel.

If it's really bothersome, I would bring it up to your doc. I have to admit curiosity as to what is causing yours to see if it's the same as me...

Hope tomorrow morning is nausea-free!

I dealt with this one summer. It was from stress. I was working for my father, and the stress was really bad. I would wake up, vomit, and then go about my day just fine after that. Any chance yours could be stress related????

I wouldn't be all that surprised if there was a stress/anxiety component - afterall, I have been known to vomit when under extreme duress/anxiety.

However, this has been a daily thing since April 2005 - and I haven't been under constant stress that entire time (though pretty nearly so ). When I first went to the doctor, I thought it was certainly anxiety, but after my prolactin levels came back elevated the first time, they said no??? I did talk to my psychiatrist about it on multiple occasions, and she has always insisted that there must be a biological component, too.

Maybe I am just irrevocably screwed.

I really do think that some of us have a stronger mind/body connection. I can also induce AF with stress, even if I just had it 1-2 weeks before. I've been like this almost all my life (at least 11 or 12). Maybe stress is elevating your prolactin leves, too??? Have you tried biofeedback or meditation. You might respond really well to something like that.

Biofeedback, no, meditation, yes. Unfortunately, my mind spins so rapidly, I'm not very successful at it. I always have thoughts crowding in, and, actually, the most successful thing I have found is a therapy called DBT (dialectical behavior therapy). There's a strong "thought-stopping"/meditation component to it. Unfortunately, again, it's been a long time since I've had the therapy and without insurance, it's really impossible for me to do it again.

That's amazing about inducing your AF - I couldn't induce one of those if I tried! Ha! I go years without AF, and can't seem to get one to save my life.

I, too, believe in a mind-body connection - but I don't know if there's any documentation on stress and prolactin levels. My endo said (briefly, flippantly) that it was related to testosterone...how, I don't know. I definitely need to do more research on this topic, methinks.

Wow. I never thought I'd find other people with the same problem.

I've always been nauseous waking up, for as long as I can remember. I have slightly elevated prolactin levels and no one ever told me that these two things could be related.

About nine months into bc (and the third different kind), I started to get really bad nausea. The doctor couldn't find anything in my bloodwork to suggest a problem and the GI doc didn't find anything either. They did find cysts in my ovaries, which is how I was diagnosed with PCOS, but not one of the doctors I saw (gastro, regular, and ob-gyn) ever mentioned that these things could be related.

Lately, I throw up about every three weeks or so. And it's not only in the morning. Three and a half weeks ago I was at a family party at night and threw up in the bathroom and had really bad stomach pain. I had to go back to home.

AF arrived on 5/27 and I've been really nauseous ever since. I threw up yesterday and today, but didn't have much to vomit since I was barely eating. I was starting to wonder if maybe this wasn't AF, but implantation bleeding instead, but I think it's probably too heavy and too long to be implantation bleeding.

Any thoughts?

I have had the same problem where I wake in the morning and feel strong nausea, then it washes over me in waves and I try to suppress with the whole 'mind over matter' thing. Sometimes this works. Other times I also will throw up and it is usually 'big bird yellow' and watery.
I have also noticed that when I have a cold/virus/flu that it will happen when I have a lot of muck that needs to get off my chest.

My partner just went through telling me stuff like it is all because I am as big as I am, and that I throw up for no reason. He seems to think it is all a game, like I am choosing to do it!

I have always been pretty good and feeling the naesea and thinking it away by telling myself NO I will NOT throw up, cos lets face it Who of us likes to? This though I cant do it with, I have tried.

Just had blood tests that showed my hormones are all wrong, ovaries are not working at all. I figure this is one of the reasons for my being this way. reading through the replies to this thread has allowed me to see it is NOT just me as my partner seems to think, and I am NOT just imagening I have a reason to feel this way and creating it! Now the thing is how to stop it! lol

Oh I also felt really sick all the time last time I had a shot of Depo. Used it twice for 15 and 13 months respectively and had no problems, third time was the charm and so I wont use it again.

Hope this finds you all well and if anyone has anything else to add which might help us all out I look forward to reading it

Regards, Rayvyn

I saw a case like this on "Mystery Diagnosis". Turned out to actually be a malformation in the patient's intestine. I think an endoscopy and a consultation with a good gastroenterologist might be very helpful.
