Default Dandruff....any suggestions?

I was reading somewhere that dandruff is a symptom of pcos. Well I have severe dandruff and I keep this red itchy flaky rash on my forehead and it's extremely bad at the hairline. I've used cortisone cream on the rash. It seems to help a little. It's all driving me crazy though. My whole head itches! Lol tia Christy

Hi Christy. I have the same problem, never thought that it might be PCOS-related, but I'm finding that there are so many things PCOS-related that I didn't realize... Anyway, my doctor had recommended flaxseed oil, and I take 2-3 of them a day, and my scalp has gotten so much better!!! I also have a shampoo and conditioner that my stylist recommended - she said most of the prescription shampoos or over the counter ones really damage your hair (and I get my hair straightened and colored) - so I use a Japanese brand called Clay Esthe, its by Shinbi/Crede. Its a little hard to find, but if you're interested let me know and I can give you the website where I purchase it.

Yes Melissa! I am very interested. I have tried the tgel maximum strength and it didn't help plus it damaged my hair. I've tried tanzanol or something like that but it didn't help either. I tried Tea Tree it kept my hair healthy but didn't help the scalp. You said the flaxseed helped? Might have to get some today. I hate freaking pcos! Lol Thanks girl! Christy

Yes, the flaxseed oil has been very helpful for me with my scalp - I saw a difference within a few days. But I noticed that if I forget to take them for 2 days, my scalp is a mess again!! When I am not at my salon to buy the Clay Esthe products, I have purchased them from belairbeauty.com. I saw that amazon marketplace has them too, for slightly more money. Let me know if these help!! Good luck :-)

An apple cider vinegar rinse after shampooing knocks out the dandruff very well. It's a little smelly at first, but the smell goes away. Vinegar offers the added bonus of increased healthy and shiny hair too, but don't use it every day or your hair might dry out. Another way that is quick is to mix some water with baking soda and rub the top of your scalp all over and rinse. At least you won't have to worry about people starting at your flaky hair by doing this.

Nixerol is what finally worked for me. It takes care of the fungus that often causes dandruff. I had literally tried EVERYTHING else, and nothing worked. It leaves my hair a little oily, but I now use it about once a week, and you can use it on your forehead as well. You can find it around the regular shampoo at any store.

Christy...what you decsribed sounds more like Psoraisis...I also have a mild case of it along my scalp...you might want to see a dermotologist about it..it is very annoying..hopefully he can give you a medicated shampoo..
GOOD LUCK!

Dani, thanks for mentioning Arbonne!! My sister just started selling it less than a month ago. I looked through the catalog to see what products they have and saw the dandruff shampoo, but because I haven't tried anything that's gotten rid of the itch, I was skeptical.

I'm buying it now!!!

Thank you!!!

I LOVE the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. It is the only thing that has worked on my my dandruff. Mine was so bad that if I touched my hair during the day it was like a snow shower on my desk! So embarassing because I play with my hair all the time! Also if you live near a sally Hansen Beauty Supply they care what is called "The Generic" and it is a generic of Paul Mitchell and works just as well for half the price.

Ashly,

Nizoral.... It's the best. They now sell it over the counter. Nothing seemed to help me. My derm. prescribed it to me. He also suggested I use it on my forehead and eyebrows since I get flakey there too. Try it, they sell it everywhere.

Neutrogena T-Gel Shampoo it covers around 5 different types of scalp flaking including dandruff.
Dandruff shampoo alone didn't work for me but T-Gel is great. I actually don't use the t-gel anymore just normal shampoo. Occassionally will revert back to T-Gel.
Also stress can cause flaky scalp so get some relaxation!
