I have the most irritating case of dandruff. It comes and it goes. I have used selsun blue and head & shoulders. Does anyone have any suggestions or than going to an M.D.? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

I've always had on and off cases of dandruff. I find when mine gets really bad, I use Nizoral for a couple of washes and it goes back to normal. I'm one who can't use regular shampoo though. I always use an anti dandruff shampoo. Right now I really like Garnier Fructis Anti Dandruff for a regular type shampoo. I hope this helps some!
The only shampoo that I've had luck with is Matrix Actrol. Not the cheapest stuff, but it keeps me itch & flake free and it smells better than a lot of the other dandruff shampoos. I usually get it at beauty supply stores!
Hmm, interesting question. I've got a few suggestions not mentioned here. The first is to try a teatree oil-based shampoo. I found it really helpful for a while.
The other thing that helped, and I know this is going to sound counterintuitive, is washing my hair a little LESS. I now wash every several days instead of daily.
Here's my understanding of why it worked:
Dandruff is a result of an oily (not dry) scalp.
The more harshly you wash your skin (any skin), the more oil your body produces to make up for the oils you remove. Over time (a month, a couple of weeks, maybe a season) your body adjusts to compensate for whatever you're doing, kind of like developing a tolerance for a drug. Wash with really harsh soap really often and you're likely to find your body producing LOTS of skin oils to make up for it. It's a vicious cycle.
Coming out of it is rough, too--if you decide that you're going to suddenly start washing (your face, your hands, whatever) less, the first week or two you'll have too much oil on your skin. Eventually, though, your body will (if all else is working okay) calm down and adjust.
So now I use a regular shampoo, not for oily or dry or colored or limp or frizzy or other stuff hair but just a regular shampoo-with-conditioner. I wash my hair about every three days, and the rest of the time I just rinse my hair under very hot water when I shower, and by default when I wet my head to make my hair behave in the morning.
HTH!

If you do a search you will see this comes up a bit, so you are not alone.
I have oily hair but dandruff. Sometimes it is not just dandruff, there are a number of skin/scalp conditions that look like dandruff - that is why sometimes your normal head & shoulders won't help. It could also be stress related or a build up of your normal shampoo.
I use - Neutrogena T-Gel (it stinks but address several of the scalp conditions, including dandruff at once). I use it for a week maybe (washing every second night) then I alternate between head & shoulders & a normal shampoo (to prevent build up).
Consequently I haven't had to use the T-Gel in ages.
I never seem able to get rid of my dandruff, only to control it. Although i found nizoral good at controlling it, it made my hair very dry and straw-like. The one that works best for me is oilatum as it stops all the soreness and itching, it also makes my hair feel lovely and silky which is a bonus! I'm not sure whether or not its available in America or not though.
I have the same problem only mine is a little more extreme. I had to go to a dermatologist and he recommend DHS Shampoo and a foam called Olux. The reason I had the Olux was I would get patches of scaley, crusty dandruff on my scalp and nothing would work. I used the DHS Shampoo once so far and my scalp was starting to look and feel better. I would Highly recommend it. I found it at Rite Aid for $14.00, that's a little pricey but well worth it.
