is it true that taking birth control pills for a long time is dangerous?
does it it make it harder to concieve when u get off of it? even though fertility is already an issue having pcos
i never had periods.. so i started bcps and now i get periods... getting periods = ovulating and flushing out correctly... ovulating = being able to have kids
bcps = good for future if i want to have kids - thats how my doc explained it to me
he said i need to be on the pills for afew yrs - so my body learns how to have periods - and kinds of push it in the right direction
he says having kids after im off the pill wold be easy
btw.. any other problems wiht long term birth control usage?
BCPs are generally not recommended for more than 10 years of use (though I'm sure a lot of doctors will disagree for money's sake). It's been said that 10+ years will decrease fertility and can raise your risk of heart attack.
Then there are the immediate consequences like blood clotting and weight gain that you have to worry about if you take BCPs at all.
It really just boils down to a personal choice...I haven't heard of too many incidences that make BCPs seem deadly or anything, so I'm willing to take my chances. If PCOS affects your fertility, I doubt using BCPs for a few years will make it that much worse.

this is something i don't understand about bcp. my periods used to be much worse before i went on the pill. i say worse, but i mean normal with the cramps and everything that everyone else in the world gets with a period. now that i am on bcp, i really believe that i am not ovulating. bcp puts your body in a false state of pregnancy, that is the hormones you're taking. so you won't get preg, because your body thinks you already are. so i bleed each month, but it's not like a real period at all. so how can taking bcp help your body "get used to" having periods and ovulating, if you aren't ovulating or having a real period if you're on bcp? i'm not saying that the doctors aren't right, i'm just saying it doesn't make sense to me. i can't wait to get off this stuff, which i will as soon as dh gets "fixed". besides the possiblity of blood clots & stroke, I am afraid that i am doing damage to my already fragile endocrine system. but that's just me. maybe i'm paranoid.

My doctor explained to me that the reason BCP are used if you're not having periods at all and aren't trying for a baby right now, is that it can damage the uterus to go a really long time without periods.
I've heard of some people who find that for a month or two after going off BCP they do have regular cycles (maybe the hormones left over from the BCP are enough to help), but it's not like being on BCP fixes things and makes you ovulate long term.
I know that when I asked my specialist about it he said not to be worried. So I just took his word for it.
I guess I look at it if it wasn't helping me have my cycle then it might be more of a problem but since it is doing more than what many people use it for, than I think we are ok.

Diagnosed 2006 bcp's (recently discover I have high blood pressure and extremely low bad cholesterol)
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
I was the same way noona, I had no period or signs of one at all, and the specialist was concerned about the affect not having a period would have on my uterus. I have been on them since I was 16, and I am now almost 21.

thanks for all the advice girls
unfortunately the negatives i get out of bcps is 20lbs i put on in a year
and the moodiness + slight depression (i think thats from the weight gain )
but the pros of bcps for me keep me on them
so confusing
to pop the pills or not to pop the pills
that is THE question
You don't ovulate on the pill. It prevents ovulation by keeping your hormones level all month long. The normal monthly ebb and flow of hormones isn't happening on the pill, so most women don't get PMS, period pain, and other wacky period side effects. When you take the inactive pills, you have a withdrawal bleed, but it is not a regular period. As long as you resume taking the active pills within 7 days, you don't ever ovulate. There are cases where women do ovulate on BCPs and get pregnant. I have a friend this happened to TWICE. Normally, they need a pill with higher estrogen.
Over time BCPs thin the lining of the uterus. That is why most women experience less painful periods while on BCPs.
Taking BCPs increases your risk of breast cancer, although studies say that after stopping the pill, your risk returns to normal.
i am addicted to Cosmopolitian.. and for others of you that are as well and have every issue from jan to dec. i didn't know that if you put them in order (jan-dec) that the side of them makes a picture .. lol anyways.. i was just going to post something that i found in my cosmopolitian magazine...

How Oral Contraceptives Affect Your Cancer Odds
Taking the pill appears to reduce your cancer risk-- specifically uterine, ovarian and bowel cancer--reports a recent study. Previous researchers has also found that women on the pill have lower odds of developing certain cancers, but this new study further concluded that if a woman goes on the pill at some point in her life, she may lessen her overall cancer risk. One caveat: Woman who popped the pill for more than 8 years had slightly higher cancer rates, mainly for cervical and central nervous system cancers. If your closing in on a decade of pill use, study researchers suggest being vigilant about getting regular cancer screenings.

Noona, I think which BCP you take can make a difference whether you have menstrual pain or not. Of course, everybody is different, and so they are affected differently by different BCP brands. Years ago, I took Ortho Tri and it gave me morning sickness. I took Ortho Levlen, and I still had cramps, but not quite as bad as without BCPs. Recently I took Yaz, and I had no cramps or other period discomfort at all and no PMS. The doctor took me back off again after a year because I don't really need them for birth control. So far the cramps have been bearable, but I hate how my body just freaks out while I am on my period. I retain water before my period, then I pee constantly when it starts. I have extra bowel movements (sorry TMI) and just generally feel awful during my period if I am not on BCPs.
