OMG! I have the same thing. Under and around my breasts, I hate it! when u find a solution please let me know!!!!
Yes it can be scrubbed off, yes it comes back. Check thread kat suggested!
Two What i've found works best for riding your self of it even for a short amount of time is a good hot steamy shower, one of those face puffs, and a granulated soap, or exfoliating soap. And scrub!!!!
I have it under the arms, backs of my arms, I have one spot on my ribs where it shows up, insides of my thighs, around my neck....i think thats it..........wait there is a small patch around my ankle.
It from my understanding is part of Insulin resistant/diabetes.

Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is caused by insulin resistance or diabetes. Your body doesn't use the insulin properly, so your panceas keeps producing more and eventually the insulin spills over into the skin causing the dark skin and thickened ridges.
Mine improved drastically back in 2002 when I went on a strict low carb diet, exercised 30 minutes a day, and lost 30 pounds in three months. Metformin or other diabetes medications can help as it helps your body to use the insulin more efficiently and your pancreas not to make so much.
It's an interal problem, and therefore, creams and topical treatments can't really help because it needs to be treated internally. If some cysters are able to scrub it off, then I don't believe they really have AN, but perhaps a different skin condition or maybe it was just dirt.
Other cysters have lost their excess weight and gotten their sugars balanced out and have had it disappear completely as a result. When they returned to old eating habits and began gaining weight again, it returned.
I'm currently on 1000 mg of Metformin daily and trying to diet and exercise. I'm hoping the AN will fade for me like it did before.

This was a very good response. Im new to this site and cannot seem to navigate my way to this "link" everyone is talking about it. I dont see it =(. But today was my first day back to the Dr. after 2 years of untreated PCOS. My Doctor's testing me for it just to be sure, but I have just about all of the symptoms. I have tried scrubbing this drk stuff off for yrs and it hasnt gone anywear. lol Dang, it kinda sucks... but hopefully can get on some kind of meds "Metformin" to treat it.
